  • Mapping of graphic-semantic representations in design teaching

    This article proposes a reflection on the visual thinking tools used in graphic design teaching as an active methodology that help the synthesis process of the expressive code and support graphic expression and semantics in design practice. It’s intended to analyze more specifically the use of mood boards as an imagery tool in the creation of a brand mark and its relationship with expressive codes. To build a relevant and meaningful brand mark, it is important to be aware of the semantic elements used. Tools like mood boards help students with the aesthetic-symbolic references of the form and make the semantic concepts more perceptible. At the end we analyze mood boards and their relationship with semantics in the creation of brand marks. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
  • Teaching methodologies in the scope of collaborative design towards cultural interaction

    The aim of this paper is to present a reflection about the importance of collaborative work between students in different cultures and context realities, using as a launch method, a design thinking workshop. The goals of the workshop were, by introducing the principles of design thinking to a focus group of university students, in Finland and Portugal, to implement and develop, the ability to experiment the design thinking process, and to realize how the interaction of different perspectives, can lead to innovative solutions, as to the promotion of interdisciplinary work. Design Thinking is a flexible methodology, that can be used in any work field, since it as valuable elements, such as iterating frequently based on continuous feedback from all the intervenient. During the workshop, the teams followed the stages of the interactive Design Thinking Microcycle: (re)Defining the problem, Need finding and Benchmarking, Ideation, Prototyping and Testing. This approach leads to a high variety of ideas. Through rapid low-resolution prototyping ideas are continuously being tested with the potential users. ―Fail early in order to succeed sooner‖ is the Design Thinking principle that helps to maximize learnings and insights, crucial for human centered innovation. Collaborative work in a small groups scenario map, leads to the discussion of solutions, and to the innovation that emerges from the different perspectives given by each person. Our main goal, was to find business opportunities that emerge from underestimated issues from everyday life, but also to understand that exploring, understanding, and prioritizing areas, can be crucial to ideating solutions. As final result we intend to analyze and compare results from each focus group, in Finland and in Portugal, in order to understand the differences to the problem solving approach, from each cultural and social context.
  • Graphic-Semantic Expressions Map: A New Tool on Design Teaching

    This paper aims to contribute to the discussion in design teaching and its consequent research context, considering participatory practices and methodologies. We propose a methodologic map, which will assist the process of synthesis expressive code and also boost the relationship between graphic expression and semantics in design practice. At the end, an attempt is made to evaluate if the association of semantic elements with graphic elements promote the convergence between the project goals and the synthesis of expressive codes, while facilitating the interpretation and creation of new graphic products.

  • Designing with people for inclusive growth

    This paper presents a collaborative project defined by interdisciplinary dialogue in formal, informal and culturally plural learning contexts, considering educational practices alternative to the classroom model. The present case takes place in the Portuguese village of Nisa. Gathering artisans, designers and artists, along with students from the Visual Arts and Technologies Degree (from Lisbon’s Polytechnic ESELx); merging students in context; providing them experience of local culture and memory – we aim to achieve ways of projecting in the future material and immaterial memory and heritage kept within human and material diversity; reflecting also on collaborative and participative methodologies in design teaching and research.

  • Práticas projectuais criativas no ensino do design

    O objectivo do presente artigo é apresentar um projeto colaborativo fundado na promoção do diálogo interdisciplinar na aprendizagem formal, informal e culturalmente plural, considerando práticas educacionais e alternativas projetuais para o modelo não-participativo padrão, centrado na sala de aula. Centrada no campo do ensino e da investigação em Design, visa a linha de investigação proposta desenvolver esforços no sentido da análise do modus operandi e dos resultados obtidos pela adoção da metodologia do processo do design no plano educacional, em particular no Ensino do Design (nas suas múltiplas esferas). O propósito da investigação, tenta aferir a importância da aplicação de metodologias menos convencionais no ensino de design, assim como a percepção de como um contexto imersivo de aprendizagem pode constituir uma ferramenta facilitadora da aprendizagem, fomentando o pensamento criativo, a geração de novas ideias e caminhos futuros para a problemática em questão. No final pretende-se aferir a importância da aplicação das novas metodologias e de que forma este contexto imersivo de aprendizagem é um facilitador da aprendizagem fomentando a criatividade proporcionando novas ideias e caminhos futuros para a problemática em questão.
  • Modelo de ação participativa no ensino do Design

    A Licenciatura em Artes Visuais e Tecnologias (AVT) da Escola Superior de Educação de Lisboa (ESELx) do Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa integra no seu plano de estudos a UC Projeto II, composta pelo módulo em Design de Produto e Design de Interação. No segundo semestre do ano letivo 2017/18 o trabalho desenvolvido nesta UC foi subordinado ao tema “Alma e identidade: Olaria pedrada de Nisa – um património por descobrir”, tendo como caso de estudo a técnica da Olaria Pedrada de Nisa. Para o desenvolvimento deste projeto aplicou-se a metodologia practice-based (Candy, 2006) para aferir até que ponto esta metodologia promove a aquisição do conhecimento e de um know-how quase em extinção.
  • Local identity trhought global design

    The purpose of this communication is to present a reflection on the importance of culture and heritage as transmitter of cultural identity, as the measure of an identity and image representing a community, and the contributions of design as a project that ensures the development of a construction of community identity. It discusses the importance of heritage and Culture as a differential factor for the construction of a local identity, since cultural diversity takes many forms through time and space. Culture constitutes the common heritage of humanity and should be recognized and affirmed for the benefit of present and future generations. Culture as transmitter of messages must be taken and understood as an essential element in the representation of a place. This article therefore intends to discuss the importance of local culture and to see how it can survive and project globally without losing its identity, and how design can project globally.
