- Assessing the quality and reliability of ChatGPT’s responses to radiotherapy-related patient queries: GPT-3.5 versus GPT-4Publication . Grilo, Ana; Marques, Catarina; Corte-Real, Maria; Carolino, Elisabete; Caetano, MarcoPatients frequently resort to the Internet to access cancer information. Nevertheless, these online websites often need more content accuracy and readability. Recently, ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot, signifies a potential paradigm shift in how cancer patients can access vast medical information. However, given that ChatGPT was not explicitly trained for oncology-related inquiries, the quality of the information it provides still needs to be verified. Evaluating the quality of responses is crucial, as misinformation can foster a false sense of knowledge and security, lead to noncompliance, and delay appropriate treatment. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the quality and reliability of ChatGPT’s responses to standard patient queries about radiotherapy, comparing the performance of GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. Methods: Forty commonly asked radiotherapy questions were selected and inserted into both versions. Responses were evaluated by six radiotherapy experts using a General Quality Score (GQS), assessed for consistency and similarity using the cosine similarity score, and analyzed for readability using the Flesch Reading Ease Score (FRES) and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL). Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney test. Results: GPT-4 demonstrated superior performance, with higher GQS and a complete absence of lower scores compared to GPT-3.5. The Mann-Whitney test revealed statistically significant differences in some questions, with GPT-4 generally receiving higher ratings. The cosine similarity score indicated substantial similarity and consistency in responses from both versions. Readability scores for both versions were considered college-level, with GPT-4 scoring slightly better in FRES (35.55) and FKGL (12.71) compared to GPT-3.5 (30.68 and 13.53, respectively). Both versions’ responses were deemed challenging for the public to read. Conclusions: While GPT-4 generates more accurate and reliable responses than GPT-3.5, both models present readability challenges for the public. ChatGPT reveals potential as a valuable resource for addressing common patient queries related to radiotherapy. However, it is crucial to acknowledge its limitations, including the risks of misinformation and readability issues.
- Assessment of particulate matter levels and sources in a street canyon at Loures, Portugal: a case study of the REMEDIO projectPublication . Almeida-Silva, Marina; Canha, Nuno; Vogado, Filipa; Baptista, P. C.; Faria, A. V.; Faria, T.; Coutinho, J. T.; Alves, C.; Almeida, S. M.Air quality in urban environments is directly related to structural aspects of streets and traffic variables, justifying the need for local assessments. This information is crucial to obtain accurate and reliable statistical modeling of the implementation of different mitigation scenarios aiming to improve the local air quality management. The present study intended to assess temporal trends of particulate matter levels in a street canyon of the urban area of Moscavide (Loures, Portugal) for one-month in autumn of 2016. Moreover, fine and coarse particles were characterized by their carbonaceous and elemental contents in order to identify the main pollution sources affecting the study area. Particle concentration peaks were observed during the daytime and were associated with traffic intensity due to commuting. During the studied period, no exceedances of the limit values set by the European legislation were registered. The natural sources sea salt and mineral dust contributed, on average, to 6 and 8% of PM10 levels. The Fe/Cu ratios indicated the contribution of wear emissions from road traffic. Enrichment of anthropogenic elements in PM was found. Several traffic markers were identified from specific correlations between elements (good: Cu–Mn, Cu–Pb; moderate: Cu–Zn, Mn–Zn, Pb–Zn), highlighting the contribution of local traffic to PM levels. This information is valuable to understand the possible health effects of particulate matter levels on citizens due to their exposure and to establish a reference scenario with which the future implementation of mitigation measures targeting local traffic can be compared to assess improvements in air quality in the studied street canyon.
Chinita, FátimaABSTRACT - Jean Cocteau, French cinema auteur avant la lettre, has consecrated his uniqueness to the defense of the “poet” and the promotion of its artistic ideals, before the French Nouvelle Vague inspired the break away from the filmic tradition and ahead of the eulogistic tendency to consider the director the undisputed creative entity of the filmmaking process. The Orphic trilogy expresses Cocteau’s cinematic philosophy in action. In other words, it reveals the way by which the creative entity affirms itself as the major filmic enunciator, through an allegorical relationship with vision. Therefore, Cocteau’s self-reflexive metacinema conjoins, in a fertile attunement, the starting point and the ultimate goal, the creation and the reception. Without being exactly a cinema about the cinema, this artistic practice is, nonetheless, very much with the cinema, feeding as it does on its essence. The films Le Sang d’un poète (“The Blood of a Poet”, 1932), Orphée (“Orpheus”, 1950) and Le Testament d’Orphée, ou ne me demandez pas pourquoi! (“Testament of Orpheus”, 1960) recreate, in allegorical form, the double creative function: the look of the directing entity reflects the gaze of the observer, just as this one always restores the presence of the creator. In short: Cocteau’s films, more than anyone else’s, deliberately reflect its auteur as enunciator.
- Balancing act: tubulin glutamylation and microtubule dynamics in Toxoplasma gondiiPublication . Delgado, Inês L.S.; Gonçalves, João; Fernandes, Rita; Zúquete, Sara; Basto, Afonso P.; Leitão, Alexandre; Soares, Helena; Nolasco, SofiaThe success of Toxoplasma gondii (intracellular parasite) host cell invasion relies on the apical complex, a specialized microtubule cytoskeleton structure associated with secretory organelles. The genome encodes three isoforms of both α- and β-tubulin which are altered by specific post-translational modifications (PTMs), changing the biochemical/biophysical proprieties of microtubules, and modulating their interaction with associated proteins. Tubulin PTMs are a powerful and evolutionarily conserved mechanism to generate tubulin diversity, forming a biochemical ‘tubulin code’ that can be ‘read’ by microtubule-interacting factors. The T. gondii tubulin PTMs are: α-tubulin acetylation, α-tubulin detyrosination, Δ5α-tubulin, Δ2α-tubulin, α- and β-tubulin polyglutamylation, and α- and α-tubulin methylation. Tubulin glutamylation is a key candidate to assist microtubule remodeling in Toxoplasma, being involved in the regulation of microtubule stability, dynamics, interaction with motor proteins, and severing enzymes. The correct balance of tubulin glutamylation is achieved by the coordinated action of polyglutamylases and deglutamylating enzymes. In this work, we will review and discuss the current knowledge on T. gondii tubulin glutamylation. By in silico identification of mammalian protein orthologs, we explored and updated the identification of putative proteins related to glutamylation, contributing to a better understanding of the role of tubulin glutamylation in T. gondii.
- Data mining framework for fatty liver disease classification in ultrasound: a hybrid feature extraction paradigmPublication . Acharya, U. R.; Sree, S. V.; Ribeiro, Ricardo; Krishnamurthi, G.; Marinho, Rui; Sanches, João; Suri, J. S.PURPOSE: Fatty liver disease (FLD) is an increasing prevalent disease that can be reversed if detected early. Ultrasound is the safest and ubiquitous method for identifying FLD. Since expert sonographers are required to accurately interpret the liver ultrasound images, lack of the same will result in interobserver variability. For more objective interpretation, high accuracy, and quick second opinions, computer aided diagnostic (CAD) techniques may be exploited. The purpose of this work is to develop one such CAD technique for accurate classification of normal livers and abnormal livers affected by FLD. METHODS: In this paper, the authors present a CAD technique (called Symtosis) that uses a novel combination of significant features based on the texture, wavelet transform, and higher order spectra of the liver ultrasound images in various supervised learning-based classifiers in order to determine parameters that classify normal and FLD-affected abnormal livers. RESULTS: On evaluating the proposed technique on a database of 58 abnormal and 42 normal liver ultrasound images, the authors were able to achieve a high classification accuracy of 93.3% using the decision tree classifier. CONCLUSIONS: This high accuracy added to the completely automated classification procedure makes the authors' proposed technique highly suitable for clinical deployment and usage.
