- Numerical and experimental analysis of a hybrid wind-wave offshore floating platform’s hullPublication . Hallak, Thiago S.; Gaspar, José F.; Kamarlouei, Mojtaba; Calvário, Miguel; Gonçalves Cavaco Mendes, Mário José; Thiebaut, Florent; Guedes Soares, CarlosThis paper presents a study regarding a novel hybrid concept for both wind and wave energy offshore. The concept resembles a semi-submersible wind platform with a larger number of columns. Wave Energy Devices such as point absorbers are to be displayed around the unit, capturing wave energy while heaving and also enhancing the stability of the platform. In this paper, a first numerical study of the platform’s hull, without Wave Energy Converters, is carried out. Experiments in wave basin regarding the same unit have been conducted and the results are presented and compared to the numerical ones. Both stability and seakeeping performances are assessed and compared.
- Towards a hardware-in-the-loop quantum optical ground station simulator and testbedPublication . Niehus, Manfred; Simão, José; Silva, João Castanheira da; Serrador, António; Carvalho, João M.; Gonçalves Cavaco Mendes, Mário JoséA single pass Bennett-Brassard 1984 protocol quantum key distribution downlink from a small quantum satellite in low earth orbit to an optical ground station is studied with the objective to develop the framework for a hardware-in-the-loop quantum optical ground station simulator and testbed.
- Design, control, and testing of a multifunctional soft robotic GripperPublication . Correia, A.; Charters De Azevedo, Tiago; Leite, Afonso; Campos, Francisco M.; Monge, Nuno; Rocha, André; Mendes, Mário J. G. C.This paper proposes a multifunctional soft robotic gripper for a Dobot robot to handle sensitive products. The gripper is based on pneumatic network (PneuNet) bending actuators. In this study, two different models of PneuNet actuators have been studied, designed, simulated, experimentally tested, and validated using two different techniques (3D printing and molding) and three different materials: FilaFlex 60A (3D-printed), Elastosil M4601, and Dragonskin Fast 10 silicones (with molds). A new soft gripper design for the Dobot robot is presented, and a new design/production approach with molds is proposed to obtain the gripper’s PneuNet multifunctional actuators. It also describes a new control approach that is used to control the PneuNet actuators and gripper function, using compressed air generated by a small compressor/air pump, a pressure sensor, a mini valve, etc., and executing on a low-cost controller board—Arduino UNO. This paper presents the main simulation and experimental results of this research study.
- A gantry robot automatic positioning system using computational visionPublication . Beites, Nuno; Dias, Manuel; Gonçalves Cavaco Mendes, Mário José; Carreira, Fernando; Campos, F.; Calado, João Manuel FerreiraWith the new industrial revolution (industry 4.0) under way, there is a need to automate/digitalize even the simplest processes to keep companies competitive, efficient and secure. This work proposes an automatic and robotic positioning system with position control through the image of video cameras. The objective is to propose this type of automatic system to companies aiming to improve robotic systems operations that are often controlled manually and with associated risks. The developed system was tested in simulation (using Matlab) and in an experimental scale prototype.
- On the experimental study of a concentric wave energy array adapted to an offshore floating platformPublication . Kamarlouei, Mojtaba; Gaspar, José F.; Calvário, Miguel; Hallak, Thiago S.; Mendes, Mário J. G. C.; Thiebaut, Florent; Guedes Soares, CarlosExperimental results of the dynamics of a small scale concentric wave energy converter array adapted to a floating offshore platform are presented. A small scale prototype is tested without and with twelve conical heaving point absorbers. The free decay and regular wave tests are carried out in an ocean basin to understand the hydrodynamic interactions between various elements of the floating offshore platform and wave energy converter array. Meanwhile, the heave motions of the buoys are observed in regular waves with and without dampers for the initial estimation of power take-off damping as a pitch control module. The results show the improvements in heave, pitch, and roll performance of the platform due to the interaction between the buoys and platform.
- Industrial collaborative robotics platformPublication . Vicente, L.; Lomelino, P.; Carreira, F.; Campos, F. M.; Mendes, Mário J. G. C.; F. G. Osório, A. Luís; Calado, João Manuel FerreiraCyber-physical systems are not designed to integrate an industrial collaborative network when their integration with other systems is required. It is necessary to adopt a strategic model of integration and value creation that allows the interoperability of equipment supported by open technologies, based on the concepts underlying Industry 4.0. To this end, a conceptual information architecture is proposed to manage industrial robotic platforms based on a Cyber Device Bus design. The challenge is to contribute to an open technological framework involving computer systems, cyber-physical systems, and IoT elements in a logic of integration by adaptation without the need for specialized adapters. Adaptation occurs through the adoption of the informatics System of Systems (ISoS) technological framework, providing an integrated service-oriented (micro-services) view of technology elements and establishing cooperation between computer and cyber-physical systems under different responsibilities and based on a diversity of technological frameworks.
- An internet remote laboratory to teach industrial automationPublication . Gonçalves Cavaco Mendes, Mário José; Martins, LuísThis paper presents the new internet remote laboratory (IRL), constructed at Mechanical Engineering Department (MED), Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL), to teach Industrial Automation, namely electropneumatic cycles. The aim of this work was the development and implementation of a remote laboratory that was simple and effective from the user point of view, allowing access to all its functionalities through a web browser without having to install any other program and giving access to all the features that the students can find at the physical laboratory. With this goal in mind, it has been implemented a simple architecture with the new programmable logic controller (PLC) SIEMENS S7-1200, and with the aid of several free programs, programming technologies such as JavaScript, PHP and databases, it was possible to have a remote laboratory, with a simple interface, to teach industrial automation students.
- A review of fault tolerant design in wave energy convertersPublication . Kamarlouei, Mojtaba; Gaspar, José F.; Guedes, Carlos; Cruz, B. F.; Mendes, Mário J. G. C.The main objective of this pape is to presente a review on typical faults including the actual development and application of the fault tolerant design techniques in WEC systems and subsystems. Also, various WEC devices are studied and categorized in three diferente maintenance levels based on the defined criteria in maintenance standard. In this paper, the oscillating body and structure, power take-off system and transmission units, control, safety and survivability units are considered as the essencial componentes of the WEC for fault and failure study. Moreover, several faults are identified and fault tolerant design techniques are proposed for these systems. - Fault detection system for the Évora irrigation canalPublication . Louro, Diogo; Mendes, Mário J. G. C.; Valério, Duarte; Costa, José Sá daA model-based fault detection (FD) system was developed for a Simulink simulation of a four pool irrigation canal in ´Evora, Portugal. Incipient and abrupt faults in the gates, the water off-take valves and the water level sensors were considered. Neural Networks were used to model the canal and find the residue. The training algorithm employed for the NNs was found to be an important factor determining the success of the FD system.
