- Navigating the blue: storytelling, poetics, and rhetoric in oceanic advertisingPublication . Sousa, Vanda de; Verissimo, JorgeThis paper explores the application of poetic rhetoric in sustainable tourism advertising and its profound impact on shaping perceptions and behaviors towards sustainability. By integrating classical rhetorical techniques with modern storytelling methods, advertisements can effectively promote ethical and sustainable practices. The advertisement “It’s not tourism. It’s futourism.” employs poetic and rhetorical elements to create a narrative that is visually striking and emotionally resonant. Ethos is established through connections with cultural traditions and images, pathos appeals to feelings of hope and responsibility, and logos presents rational arguments for adopting futurism as a new sustainable approach. The discussion includes references to Jacques Cousteau’s visual narratives and Henry David Thoreau’s philosophical perspectives, enriching the approach to environmental communication. Cousteau’s films, such as “The Silent World” (1956) and “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau” (1968-1976), use storytelling to evoke a sense of wonder and responsibility towards marine life. Thoreau’s “Walden” (1854) emphasizes introspection and a deep connection with nature, advocating for a more conscious and sustainable way of life. Furthermore, the analysis of digital narrative in advertisements, particularly in the context of the Atlantic Ocean, underscores the importance of protecting marine resources for local and global economies. The narrative approach in advertising not only attracts tourists but also educates them about the significance of ocean conservation, ensuring a sustainable future for all. The interdisciplinary approach combining literary theory, rhetoric, and advertising provides a comprehensive perspective on crafting effective narratives for environmental communication. As digital platforms continue to evolve, the integration of storytelling techniques in advertising will play a crucial role in advancing environmental communication and promoting a sustainable future.

- Dataset of a national survey on online gambling activities among young people in PortugalPublication . Farias, Ana Rita; Coelho Antunes, Ana CristinaBackground Recent advancements in online gambling have significantly increased the popularity and participation in gambling activities among the general population, specifically the young generations. These changes are reshaping gambling behaviors, attracting a growing number of enthusiasts. This paper describes a dataset that maps online gambling activities among young individuals in Portugal, providing insights into their gambling prevalence, habits, behaviors, preferences, and potential antecedents and consequences of these activities. Methods A survey was conducted with a representative sample of 1,993 young people in Portugal, aged between 18 and 34, to gather data on their activities. This methodology involved a quantitative telephone survey conducted in March and April 2023, utilizing quota sampling to ensure representation across various regions. The data collection process employed Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) and involved rigorous quality control measures to ensure accuracy and reliability. Conclusion The dataset generated from this survey provides valuable insights into the patterns of online gambling activities among young Portuguese individuals. It allows researchers to explore potential risk factors, including gambling-related harm, and to understand the sociodemographic factors influencing gambling behaviors. The findings can inform interventions and policies aimed at mitigating the negative consequences of online gambling among youth.
- Citation patterns, the Matilda effect and gender bias in communication & media studies scientific output in Ibero-America (1980-2022)Publication . Torrado-Morales, Susana; Zamora-Medina, Rocío; Olmos, Maribel; Subtil, FilipaThis article analyses diachronically the role of women in the field of communication & media studies in Ibero-America by studying the presence or absence of women in the bibliography of a selection of articles taken from 60 communication academic journals in 9 countries (Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) between 1980 and 2022. This study measures the degree of visibility of female scientists and their contribution and compares it statistically to that of their male counterparts by quantifying from a gender perspective the citation patterns of authors of the 484 scientific articles included in the study. The findings showed that the visibility of the female researchers-authors increased over time. Furthermore, an over-citation of publications by male researchers was also found. Last, in one of the periods analysed, in the years between 1996-2010, gender homophily was found, i.e., female researchers tended to cite more women than men during this period.
- Internal communication in pharmaceutical companies: a case study of Portuguese companies during the pandemic of COVID-19Publication . Alves Garcia, Ana AndreiaWhile companies across different sectors in the Western world have increasingly begun to value their employees’ roles, this practice is not yet universal in our globalized economy. This research examines how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced employee communication practices within pharmaceutical companies operating in Portugal. Through a survey of communication managers, our findings reveal that these companies not only shifted to online communication channels during the pandemic but continue to maintain these digital platforms as primary communication tools.
- Analysis of the policies and constraints limiting the aquaponics industry in PortugalPublication . Mata, F.; Dos Santos, Maria José Palma LampreiaAquaponics is an innovative and potentially sustainable method of producing vegetables and fish, enabling local, inland fish production, and vegetable production without the need for artificial fertilization. With the aim to analyze the potential development of commercial aquaponics in Portugal, a group of Portuguese stakeholders and experts were interviewed to capture their understanding of the challenges faced by the emerging Portuguese aquaponics sector. The paper evaluates and discusses the main issues experienced by stakeholders, proposing solutions to overcome barriers and restrictions. Legal and administrative barriers were identified, and it is recognized that aquaponics requires its own legal and administrative framework. Bureaucracy is duplicated in licensing processes, authorizations for sale, and permits. Exotic fish species, such as tilapia (Tilapia spp.) face legal barriers to their use in aquaculture. The freshwater aquaculture species to consider for integration into aquaponics systems are largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), and eel (Anguilla anguilla). To address barriers to the organic certification of aquaponics products, producers need to collaborate and establish their own certification schemes.
- Modeling cork yield, thickness, price, and gross income in the Portuguese cork oak montadoPublication . Mata, F.; Dos Santos, Maria José Palma LampreiaThe cork oak (Quercus suber L.) woodlands, known as montados in Portugal, hold significant economic, cultural, social, and environmental value. They are found in the Mediterranean Sea basin, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula, and sustain various activities like silvopastoralism, with cork being a primary product. Despite its economic significance, challenges such as climate change threaten its sustainability. This study aimed to analyze the edaphoclimatic variables affecting cork yield, thickness, price, and gross income in the Alentejo region of Portugal. A total of 35 farmers were selected for the data collection included in this study. Multivariable linear regressions were performed to establish relationships between cork yield, thickness, price, and gross income as dependent variables, various edaphoclimatic factors, and tree densities. A higher tree density correlates with an increased cork yield but a decreased cork thickness. Soil pH affects cork yield and thickness, with a lower pH favoring higher cork yields but thinner cork. A higher clay and silt content in horizon soil C enhances cork thickness and raises the price but reduces the cork yield. Higher accumulated precipitation and temperatures contribute to higher yields and thicknesses of cork. It is concluded that the relationships between the dependent and the independent variables are complex but partially explainable. Understanding these relationships is paramount to ensure sustainable management practices are adopted that are capable of addressing issues raised in the current context of climate change.
