Abstract(s)
Matemática e Ciências Naturais no 2.º CEB.
Statistical Package for the Social Sciences.
ABSTRACT This report was developed as part of the course of Supervised Teaching Practice II of the 2nd year of the MA in Teaching of 1st Cycle of Basic Education and Mathematics and Natural Sciences of 2nd Cycle of Basic Education. In the first part, we present and compare the teaching practices in the 1st and 2nd Cycle of Basic Education, in 2nd and 5th grade classes. In the second part, we present the study “How effective is a set of educational resources related to animal welfare issues in 5th grade students in their awareness of this matter?”, in order to develop their awareness of animal welfare. In this sense, the following objectives were established: (i) identity the conceptions students have about various situations involving the relationship between humans and animals; (ii) develop student’s critical thinking skills regarding animal welfare through activities that enable discussion of different situations involving animals and with relevance to society; and (iii) develop their awareness of animal welfare though the recognition of many of the negative actions towards animals. We chose a methodology of mixed nature and as technique of data collection the use of questionnaire survey with closed and open questions. Quantitative data were treated at the level of inferential statistics using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software. Qualitative data were submitted to content analysis and categorizes accordingly. The results of the study indicate that children were able to identify situations of injustice, in defense of animal welfare and to argue against them. Not only were the resources built to raise awareness of animal welfare, but also to promote the discussion of different ideas among students, which contributed to the development of critical thinking skills.
