Abstract(s)
This report, entitled Problem-Based Learning as a way of developing Critical Thinking, was prepared as part of the Supervised Teaching Practice II course, a component of the Master’s degree in Teaching in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and Maths and Science in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education. The first part presents a summary description of the Pedagogical Practice carried out in the 1st and 2nd cycles and a critical analysis of the Practice that took place in both cycles. The second part presents an investigative study, qualitative in nature and with the characteristics of action research and a case study. The general objectives of the study are: To investigate whether there is a development of students' critical thinking when applying Problem-Based Learning activities in Natural Sciences classes; to verify which competences associated with critical thinking are developed by students when applying Problem-Based Learning activities. The study was carried out with two 6th grade classes in Natural Sciences and one 1st grade class in Environmental Studies. The results indicate that during the Problem-Based Learning activities in the 1st grade class, the students showed improvements in some of the abilities in the Basic Classification of Ennis' Taxonomy. In the 6th grade, the results do not allow for general conclusions, since the number of Problem-Based Learning activities carried out was small and the period of application was also very short. However, it is possible to explain which Ennis Taxonomy abilities and dispositions were used: in the 6th grade classes, five Basic Classification abilities, one Inference ability, one Advanced Classification ability and two dispositions were acquired and/or developed. In the 1st year of school there was some application of five abilities belonging to the Basic Classification, one Inference ability, one Advanced Clarification ability and two dispositions.
