Abstract(s)
This report forms part of the Curricular Unit Supervised Teaching Practice II within the Master's Degree program for Teaching the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, and Portuguese, History, and Geography of Portugal in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education. Its primary objectives include describing and critically analyzing the pedagogical practices employed with a 4th-grade class in the 1st CEB and a 6th-grade class in the 2nd CEB, as well as conducting an investigation into reading habits. The general goal of the research is to gain insights into students' reading habits and family literacy practices. The specific objectives are: (i) understanding reading habits, (ii) analyzing family literacy practices, and (iii) developing a reading motivation program. To prepare this study, we chose to follow the principles of action research. This is a study of a mixed nature: qualitative and quantitative, using direct observation, participant and non-participant action. In addition, interviews with cooperating supervisors from both cycles, questionnaire surveys, as well as document analysis were also used. Based on the investigation, an intervention project on reading motivation was implemented. The findings revealed that there are no significant differences in reading habits between the two classes or in family literacy practices. However, the data indicated that students recognize the importance of reading, albeit engaging in limited reading activities, which could be influenced by family literacy contexts and practices. Noteworthy findings include the scarcity of books at home and the lack of habits related to visiting libraries, both school and municipal.
