Abstract(s)
The main aim of this paper is to analyse the Portuguese sustainability of honey
consumers’ attitudes, intentions and perceptions, towards the supply chain of this
product, namely, the production, commercialization and consumption, in order to
allow the better development of marketing strategies, as well as the sustainable
development of the activity, to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) SDG1;
SDG2 and SDG12, from Agenda 2030 of United Nations. Information and data were
based on an online questionnaire at the national level in Portugal with 802 validated
answers. The methods include the Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behaviour, multivariate
methods (Component Principal Analysis, Cluster analysis), univariate analysis and an
econometric model. The results present a good adjustment to the model of the data.
The results conclude that honey activity actively contributes to meeting SDGs 1; 2 and
12. The consumers have positive attitudes to honey consumption and are aware of
paying more to allow the sustainability of the activity. On the other hand, Portuguese
consumers, despite preferring Portuguese honey, are available to buy imported honey.
That represents a challenge for the national production sector. Based on that results,
the Common Agricultural policies should include more programs and projects to allow
the research and development of the sector and the investment in new technologies
that protect the Portuguese producers and consumers and allow short supply chains
of the product.
