Abstract(s)
This final report was developed within the scope of the Teaching Practice Supervision II Course, integrated into the Master's Degree in Teaching for the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and Portuguese and History and Geography of Portugal for the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education, at the Lisbon School of Education. The study, titled "Perceptions about the Importance of Physical Education in Developing Cooperation and Respect for Others Skills," was conducted with 4th-grade students from the 1st Cycle of Basic Education. The research problem was defined as: What are the perceptions regarding the importance of Physical Education in developing cooperation and respect for others skills? To address the research problem, the objectives of this investigation were defined as: (i) to understand the perceptions of a 4th-grade class and their homeroom teacher regarding the importance of Physical Education in cooperation and respect for others; and (ii) to identify barriers faced by the homeroom teacher in teaching Physical Education. Considering the aforementioned objectives, a quantitative methodology was employed, where data collection was conducted through structured questionnaires. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was applied to the questionnaire data to identify patterns, relationships, and significant trends related to the investigated factors. The results of the study revealed that both students and the teacher believe that Physical Education enhances cooperation and respect for others skills. It was also possible to conclude that the barriers for the teacher to teach Physical Education were mostly related to the teacher herself rather than institutional factors.
