Abstract(s)
This final report was developed within the scope of the Curricular Unite of Supervised Teaching Practice II, integrated in the Master in Teaching the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and Portuguese and History and Geography of Portugal in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education, taught by the Higher School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon. This curricular unit contemplates the implementation of two pedagogical interventions, in the 1st and 2nd Cycle of Basic Education, as well as the development of an investigative study. The study carried out in this report – The development of critical thinking, from the teaching of History and Geography, contributes to the construction of a democratic citizenship – stemmed from the strengths and weaknesses identified in two classes of the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education. Thus, the following research objectives were outlined: (i) Analyze the levels of critical thinking in a 6th grade class; (ii) Analyze the potential of historical and geographic knowledge for the development of Skills for a Culture of Democracy; (iii) Identify teaching methodologies for the History of Geography, which promote critical thinking; and (iv) Reflect on the contribution of critical thinking to the construction of democratic citizenship. The methodology used was of a qualitative nature, adopting some characteristic action-research procedures. Statistical data were collected through individual worksheets, referring to the development of students’ critical thinking and, subsequently, through content analysis of students’ written production. The results obtained made it possible to recognize that: it’s possible to develop competences for a democratic culture and promote the acquisition of expected contents and concepts, in terms of History and Geography, through a differentiated teaching practice; (ii) it’s possible to promote the development of critical thinking through a pedagogical practice that places students at the center of their learning.
