Abstract(s)
levadas a debate.
ABSTRACT: This internship report was carried out within the scope of the Master’s degree in Journalism, from the School of Communication and Media Studies of the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon. The investigation was carried out during an internship at TSF - Rádio Notícias between January 20th and October 9th of 2020. The work intends to be an analysis of the way the TSF Forum ‒ one of the station’s symbols - decides which theme will be debated each day. The purpose of the internship report is to identify the criteria and news values used by the TSF Forum to make an editorial decision and to verify whether they coincide with those of several authors addressed throughout this research work. During the internship, it was possible to follow the various phases of the program’s design ‒ from the search, the selection of the news and the final result - and to understand the reasons that lead the editor of the TSF Forum to choose, or not, a certain topic. In addition, it was also possible to verify how the theories of gatekeeping and newsmaking apply to this radio station and identify the topics that were brought up for debate most often. To this end, 137 forums were analyzed between the months of January and October, in which it was possible to verify that themes about politics, economics and society were the most discussed. When following the TSF Forum closely, I noticed that recency, proximity, interest and novelty are determining criteria for choosing the theme. However, and in addition to all these factors, it is also essential to understand whether it makes sense to discuss a given subject, because not all the news, no matter how interesting they may be, have room for debate. Therefore, there are three essential factors for the TSF Forum’s editorial decision-making: being an important topic that has room for debate and that adds something to the TSF’s antenna; be a topic that arouses the interest of listeners; be a theme that allows you to have several guests.
