Abstract(s)
The present final report was elaborated in the context of the curriculum area of teaching practice supervised II of the master’s in education of the first cycle of basic teaching and mathematics and natural sciences of the second cycle of basic teaching. This report forms the final phase of an academic course of five years and is divided into two parts: (I) Reflecting description of the internship on the first and second cycles of basic teaching; (II) Investigative study realized in the context of the second Basic Teaching cycle, in fifth-grade students. The first part of the study synthesizes the practices developed in the first and second cycles of basic teaching, presenting one critical analysis between both cycles. The investigation study was realized in a fifth-grade class, the main objective is to understand which way students from fifth grade develop statistical knowledge by realizing statistical investigations. The investigation questions for this study explore how the formulation of statistical investigations influences the way of defining problems and the planning of statistical work, as well as in the organization, treatment, and data analysis, Considering the plan, the study adopted a qualitative approach, following an interpretative paradigm, more specifically a study case. As a method of data collection resorted to the appliance of diagnostic sheets, at the beginning and the end of the investigation, as well as to the observation of the registered participation through the field notes and the photographic register of students’ productions. Based on Curcio's (1987) categorization, analysis categories were created that allowed the collected data to be analysed. The participants were 12 students between the ages of 10 and 13 years, that have assigned the consent to participate in this study. The results indicate that the educative intervention had a positive impact on the development of students’ statistical competencies. In conclusion, the realization of statistical investigations improved the fifth-grade students’ statistical knowledge, although it is essential to consider and overcome the constraints identified to maximize the benefits of this methodology.
