Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - This project report – thesis for the Master’s in Theatre Directing – aims to describe the creative process of directing Henrik Ibsen’s Little Eyolf (O Pequeno Eyolf in Portuguese / Lille Eyolf in Norwegian) through the study of the physical actions and spatial relations found in the text and the application of a few of Rudolf Laban’s movement analysis system’s concepts and tools. This process also serves as an investigation regarding the possibility of a physical and spatial analysis of a text from the classical, western theatre canon as opposed to an examination of its literary traits – i.e., building a performance from the play’s stage directions and not from the characters’ lines. Exploring the themes of symbolism in Ibsenian literature, this report further examines the play’s dramaturgy and the concepts behind this production – explaining in detail the different stages of its process (from a directorial point of view) and all the concepts behind the performance’s aesthetics.
