Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT In a school context, the risk of incidents requiring First Aid is very high and outside the school, children may be the only witnesses to an accident, but they do not always know how to act in these situations. The implementation of First Aid in the curriculum of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education (CEB) has arisen in many countries and the results have been very positive, not only in terms of knowledge, but also in the increase of the survival rate. To implement First Aid in the portuguese curriculum, it is first necessary for teachers to have the necessary knowledge to teach First Aid skills to their students, but also the confidence necessary to provide care. In addition, it is necessary for the school to have the essential resources and good practice in dealing with a school accident. In this sense, this study has the theme of First Aid in a school context and aims to understand how the school responds to situations that require First Aid, to understand what is the knowledge and attitudes of teachers and students in the scope of First Aid, as well to understand how to develop knowledge and competences within the students related to First Aid, through a case study in a public institution of education and based on processes of collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data (mixed methodologies). In addition to this type of methodology, this research still has a small part based on an action-research logic, due to a period of intervention carried out with a 4th grade class. For the accomplishment of this study, students of the 3rd and 4th year of this institution were interviewed, as well as their teachers. Interviews were also conducted with the coordinator of the institution and its operational assistants. At a later stage, a new questionnaire was carried out to the target group, in order to compare the data obtained before and after the intervention. The data collected were statistically analyzed through the SPSS program (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) and through content analysis. The data collected showed some incipience of knowledge of 3rd and 4th year students in the ambit of t First Aid. However, the intervention with the 4th grade class showed an improvement in these results. Regarding teachers, the data showed that despite a certain theoretical basis and with positive attitudes towards First Aid learning, these classify their self-efficacy in the provision and teaching of First Aid in a neutral way. On the other hand, the data collected indicated that the school seems to act appropriately in an emergency, but does not meet the appropriate conditions at the level of care space, training of the operational assistants and the level of monitoring less burdensome accidents.
