A influência da cultura nos comportamentos violentos sobre a mulher nas relações de intimidade na região de Cabinda (Angola) surge como o tema central da presente dissertação, sendo o seu objetivo principal averiguar a possível existência de comportamento violento nas relações de intimidade e explorar também o que estará na base de desses comportamentos em função de variáveis sociodemográficas e contextuais, em mulheres. O estudo empírico de natureza qualitativa, recorre ao método etnográfico e à observação participante junto de uma amostra de mulheres vendedoras e à aplicação de um questionário a representantes das autoridades tradicionais. Os resultados indicam que as mulheres acompanhadas referem ter sido vítimas de violência nas relações de intimidade que têm ou tiveram. Referem ainda que ao longo da sua vida presenciaram outras situações em que a mulher foi vitimizada por um companheiro. Estas respostas são transversais apesar dos perfis demográficos e académicos serem diversos. Já as autoridades tradicionais reconhecem que a violência é frequente e justificada pelos ciúmes (associados à poligamia) e situações sociais desfavoráveis (em que se incluem dependências e desemprego). Estas tensões entre géneros e a normalização da violência sobre a mulher, está em grande medida relacionada com as práticas culturais tradicionais que tendem a atribuir à mulher um papel de subalternidade e sobrecarregá-las com as responsabilidades familiares, nomeadamente, o cuidado dos filhos e todo o trabalho doméstico. Também do ponto de vista cultural, na medida em que o valor da mulher passa pela sua capacidade de ter muitos filhos numa fase jovem da sua vida, há uma limitação no seu percurso académico que dificulta o processo de ruptura deste ciclo de violência. A educação social parece oferecer neste contexto um contributo fundamental para criar nas mulheres, em particular das regiões rurais, uma consciência dos seus direitos e da sua legitimidade enquanto cidadãs.
ABSTRACT The influence of culture on violent behaviour towards women in intimate relationships in the Cabinda region (Angola) emerges as the central theme of this dissertation. Its main objective is to investigate the possible existence of violent behaviour in intimate relationships and to explore what might underlie such behaviour according to socio-demographic and contextual variables in women. The qualitative empirical study, resorts to the ethnographic method and participant observation in a sample of women vendors, to collect data. Regarding the representators of the traditional authorities the information was gathered using a questionnaire. The results indicate that the women monitored report having been victims of violence in the intimate relationships they have or have had. They also mention that throughout their lives they have witnessed other situations in which a woman has been victimised by a partner. These responses are cross-cutting despite diverse demographic and academic profiles. Already the traditional authorities recognise that violence is frequent and justified by jealousy (associated with polygamy) and unfavourable social situations (including addictions and unemployment). These gender tensions and the normalisation of violence against women are to a large extent related to traditional cultural practices that tend to give women a subordinate role and burden them with family responsibilities, namely childcare and all domestic work. Also, from a cultural point of view, insofar as a woman's value depends on her ability to have many children at a young stage of her life, there is a limitation in her academic career that makes it difficult to break out of this cycle of violence. Social education seems to offer in this context a fundamental contribution to creating in women, particularly in rural areas, an awareness of their rights and their legitimacy as citizens.
