This Internship Report, entitled The study of the city in the 1st grade: contributions to the development of historical-geographical skills and democratic citizenship, is developed within the scope of the Supervised Teaching Practice II curricular unit integrated into the Master's Degree in Teaching the 1st Cycle of Basic Education (CEB) and Portuguese and History and Geography of Portugal in the 2nd CEB. This document consists of two parts, the first of which briefly describes, analyzes and reflects on the teaching practices carried out in the 1st and 2nd grades of primary school, and the second part develops a contextualized research study in the 1st grade class of the 3rd year of schooling with the following problem: Exploring the city through investigative activities that involve students interacting with their surroundings enhances the construction of learning about the surrounding area and the development of historical-geographical and democratic citizenship skills. In order to answer the problem, the following specific objectives were defined: (i) To analyze the characteristics of an investigative process that fosters the construction of knowledge based on the local environment; and (ii) To analyze the historical-geographical and citizenship skills developed by the students as a result of their involvement in an investigative project that values the local environment as a didactic resource. In this study, which is qualitative in nature, procedures close to the stages defined in the action research methodology are developed: diagnosis, action planning, implementation and evaluation. The results of the research make it possible to understand and confirm that exploring the city using investigative activities enhances the development of historical-geographical skills, with the following skills standing out: using different sources of information, selecting and locating phenomena in time and space and getting to know places and regions in their dynamics. The evaluation carried out by the students also highlights the development of democratic citizenship skills, such as respect, cooperation, analysis and critical thinking, knowledge and critical understanding of the world and listening and observation skills.
