Abstract(s)
Since the expansion of cities and their development, from city centers to the periphery, that the automobile had a high importance in the population. Suburbs were developed, each time further from historic areas, creating residential zones, lifeless during the day and only uses as dormitories. During these periods of time, the only concern was to create the best conditions for motor traffic In the past few decades, it became to be noted the need for change, indicating that the motorized means of transportation shouldn’t be the only ones with value. In addition to motivate the public transportation, it was also imperative to invest in soft modes, such as the bicycle and walking on foot. The main subject of this report is the Urban Renewal, of places that once represented meeting points and over the time are losing their value. Much of this research lies on improving the accessibility and mobility, as they are fundamental aspects in any space to be intervened. As such, solutions were studied to improve the spaces for pedestrian circulation, cycling and combine them with motor traffic spaces. The purpose of this document is to demonstrate all the work developed over the four-month internship in SENER-ENGIVIA and intends to expose the main conditions to consider in creating spaces accessible to all. The study case of this work consists of the renewal and landscaping of the “Largo da Igreja de Benfica” (in Lisbon), a place of high importance for the city, but which is outdated and with the need to be adapted to its users. The collaboration on this project during the internship period involved various aspects such as the layout of the road, drainage system and pavements, among others specialties. It was a goal to eliminate physical barriers, gaps and steps, creating a plan surface as a continuous space, with a friendly environment to the pedestrian and creating a coexistence area between motor vehicles and soft modes. These types of interventions aim to reduce the impact of the presence of automobiles on the city streets, focusing on the reorganization of the urban space and creating a safety environment for pedestrians.
