- A Fuzzy Logic model to enhance quality management on R&D unitsPublication . Abreu, António; Santos, Ricardo; Calado, João Manuel Ferreira; Requeijo, JoséNowadays, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), are becoming even more competitive, with the public ones, facing at the same time a greater restriction on public funding. Therefore, HEIs, have to be more effective and more efficient as well, on pursuing their own goals, which includes Research and Development (R&D) units as well. Such demands can be achieved, by enhancing R&D`s global performance. Therefore, the use of a framework such as European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), can bring value to an organization with the characteristics of a R&D unit. This work presents a new integrated method based on EFQM model, by using Fuzzy Logic, to enhance the organizations overall performance. The applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated by a case study in a R&D unit, where an initial performance evaluation takes place, by using RADAR`s Logic approach. The proposed method, based on Fuzzy Logic, is then applied, followed by the identification of the strength points as well as the improvement areas, according to the EFQM framework. Then, the improvement actions with high priority are determined, followed by the correspondent action measures.
- A fuzzy reasoning approach to assess innovation risk in ecosystemsPublication . Abreu, António; Martins, José Moleiro; Calado, João Manuel FerreiraCurrently, companies to be competitive must achieve high rates of innovation and respond quickly to market needs. According to a number of managers and researches innovation is crucial for companies to stay “alive." Taking into account several reports, the development of co-innovation networks based on a collaborative environment is the best strategy to support innovation projects. However, the absence of mechanisms to detect and even anticipate potential risks of innovation based on a collaborative approach is an obstacle to the proliferation of this way of working. To address this issue, this paper discusses an approach based on fuzzy reasoning for analyzing the level of risk in co-innovation projects. It is discussed how this approach can be applied to co-innovation projects within the contexto of a collaborative ecosystem. At last, it is discussed the benefits, and challenges found on experimental results from a Portuguese co-innovation network.
- A fuzzy logic model to evaluate the lean level of an organizationPublication . Abreu, António; Calado, João Manuel FerreiraThis paper is concerned with the development of a holistic fuzzy logic model to evaluate the lean thinking environment in an organization. The development of such a model was based on a qualitative assessment approach, including quantitative basis, whose development has been based on fuzzy logic reasoning. Recourse to the use of fuzzy logic is justified by its ability to cope with uncertainty and imprecision on the input data, as well as, could be applied to the analysis of qualitative variables of a system, turning them into quantitative values. The proposed approach was structured with the aim of to achieve a model able to cope with the specificities ofany kind of organization regardless of their nature, size, strategy and market positioning. Furthermore, the proposed methodology allows the systematically identification of constraint factors existing in an organization and, thus, provide the necessary information to the manager to develop a holistic plan for continuous improvement. To evaluate the robustness of the proposed approach, the methodology was applied to a maintenance and manufacturing aeronautical organization.
In this paper in order to determine the level of a lean organization a model based on fuzzy logic has been developed. The developed model has been based on a qualitative assessment approach, including quantitative bases, whose development was supported by the use of fuzzy logic. Recourse to the use of fuzzy logic is justified by its ability to cope with uncertainty and imprecision of the input data, as well as, could be applied to the analysis of qualitative variables of a system, turning them into quantitative values. A major advantage of the developed model is that it can be adjusted to any organization regardless of their nature, size, strategy and market positioning. Furthermore, the proposed model allows the identification systematically of constraint factors existing in the organization and thus provide the necessary information for the management to develop a holistic plan for continuous improvement. To assess the robustness of the approach proposed in this paper, the model was applied to a maintenance and manufacturing aeronautical organization, being presented the corresponding results and made a critical analysis of them.
- A framework based on fuzzy logic to manage risk in an open innovation contextPublication . Santos, Ricardo; Abreu, António; Calado, João Manuel Ferreira; Soares, José Miguel; Martins, José Duarte MoleiroVirtual enterprises (VE), is well-known to make use of open innovation to achieve competitiveness, through innovation on product development. However, its limited resources, combined with the innovation resulted from the diversity of partners involved, rises some challenges to its management, specifically regarded with risk management. To fulfill these requirements, risk management's models, have been conceived to assist managers, on preventing threats with such risks, although without adequately incorporate the influence of each process domain on product development, as well as the subjectivity regarding human perception. In order to consider these issues, this work presents an approach, supported by fuzzy logic, to assess the risk's level on product development in an open innovation context. The model robustness, will be assessed through a case study, where it will be also discussed the benefits and challenges found.
- An approach based on fuzzy logic, to improve quality management on research and development centersPublication . Santos, Ricardo; Abreu, António; Calado, João Manuel FerreiraNowadays, with globalization and with the development of emergent economies the Research and Development (R&D) Centres in Europe to survive need to achieve high levels of excellence. In this way, the use of a quality management tools, such as European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), can help the managers of such organizations to identify de best practices to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness. Hence, this paper presents a new approach to support managers of R&D centres in the decision-making process in achieving the aims mentioned above, which is based on the EFQM model integrated with Fuzzy Logic. The proposed approach was applied to a Portuguese R&D Centre to assess its overall performance. In order to evaluate the robustness of the proposed approach, the results achieved were compared with the results obtained through a traditional methodology based on RADAR’s Logic.
- Fuzzy logic model to support risk assessment in innovation ecosystemsPublication . Abreu, António; Moleiro Martins, José; Calado, João Manuel FerreiraNowadays, enterprises in global markets must achieve high levels of performance and competitiveness to stay “alive". According to several authors and as frequently mentioned by reports of practical case studies, one of the most relevant sources of competitive advantage is the innovation capacity. The identification and quantification of the existing or potential innovation risks in a collaborative environment, is an important element for the wide adoption of the innovation ecosystem paradigm. However, models to understand the innovation risks in a collaborative environment are lacking. To address this issue, this paper introduces an approach based on a qualitative assessment, including a quantitative basis, whose development was supported by fuzzy logic for analyzing the level of risk in co-innovation projects. Finally, based on experimental results from a Portuguese collaborative network, a discussion about the benefits and challenges found are discussed.
- A framework for risk assessment in collaborative networks to promote sustainable systems in innovation ecosystemsPublication . Santos, Ricardo; Abreu, António; Dias, Ana; Calado, João Manuel Ferreira; Anes, Vitor; Soares, JoséNowadays—and due to an increasingly competitive world—organizations need to collaborate in an open innovation context to be e_cient and e_ective by achieving high levels of innovation with their products and services. However, the existing resources—as well as the innovation achieved from the diversity of partners involved—brings challenges to the management; in particularly with risk management. To fulfill such needs, risk management frameworks have been created to support managers, on preventing threats with systems development, although without properly account the influence of each system component, on the entire system, as well as the subjectivity within human perception. To account for these issues, a framework supported by fuzzy logic is presented in this work, to evaluate the risk level on system development in open innovation environment. The approach robustness is assessed by using a case study, where the challenges and benefits found are discussed.
