In the present context, companies to be competitive must develop high-performance innovation capabilities that enable them to respond quickly to market needs. However, the lack of tools and methodologies to assess the performance of innovation projects in an integrated way remains an obstacle. The article begins by discussing the principles of Six Sigma and the Balanced Scorecard for performance evaluation. Next, the advantages of the Six Sigma Business Scorecard are discussed as a tool to support the evaluation of performance in innovation projects. Finally, the advantages of development in the context of a collaborative ecosystem are discussed.
- Management of innovation ecosystems based on six sigma business scorecardPublication . Calado, João Manuel Ferreira; Requeijo, José; Abreu, António; Dias, AnaIn the present context, companies to be competitive must develop high-performance innovation capabilities that enable them to respond quickly to market needs. However, the lack of tools and methodologies to assess the performance of innovation projects in an integrated way remains an obstacle. The paper begins by discussing the principles of Six Sigma and the Balanced Scorecard for performance evaluation. Next, the advantages of the Six Sigma Business Scorecard are discussed as a tool to support the evaluation of performance in innovation projects. Finally, the advantages of their application in the context of a collaborative ecosystem are discussed. It is illustrated that the BSC ensures that top management pays attention at any time to the specific elements of the Six Sigma implementation that are not working as planned, providing a link between strategy and quality initiatives assuring customers satisfaction in innovation projects.
- Proposal of a Conceptual/Functional Model to Support New Product Development DesignPublication . Dias, Ana Sofia Martins da Eira; Abreu, António; Matias, João Carlos de Oliveira; Dias, João Carlos QuaresmaInnovation and creativity are fundamental for new product development (NPD). NPD processes are a key factor for the survival of firms, in a market that nowadays is very competitive, instable and aggressive. Thus, life cycle of products it is becoming shorter, and that also due to the markets globalization. So, the development of models that can support NPD processes became a real and needed challenge. This paper aims to propose a comprehensive model of functional nature, which integrates the strategic, organizational and procedural levels, as well as the set of factors to take into account in NPD projects. Based on literature review, a comprehensive and integrated conceptual model is obtained through a deductiveinductive pathway. The conceptual model is validated in the industrial environment through four explanatory case studies, regarding the implementation of new products and services, both incremental and disruptive. After validation the conceptual framework becomes functional. And it was referred as “Systemic and Integrated Model of NPD” - SIMNPD. As a result, it is a tool to measure and evaluate processes, projects and products, dedicated to companies that innovate, design and develop new products.
- Mapping patterns of co-innovation networksPublication . Urze, Paula; Abreu, AntónioIn recent decades a significant research effort has focused on the role of innovation in giving enterprises a competitive advantage, and of socio-economic growth in general. Using the debate about systems as frameworks for innovation and the mapping of stages of innovation as our starting point, this paper aims to introduce an approach to understand the role of different types of co-innovation networks in terms of their capacity to generate novelty in terms of processes and products. The paper's empirical section is based on one case study about Portugal's largest highway concessionaire.
- Triz as a support methodology for new product developmentPublication . Dias, Ana; Matos, Luís; Navas, Helena; Abreu, AntónioGrowing demands and rapid changes in markets compel organizations to think more about innovation and continuous improvement. Nowadays, any growth strategy, and even its own survival in the markets, is increasingly being applied by new approaches and management methodologies. The study developed in the scope of this paper focused on the approach and interpretation of the use of the TRIZ methodology, in search of new ways of solving problems, identifying their support tools. Another concept explored and related to TRIZ is the New Product Development (NPD). The present paper aims to approach the concept of TRIZ regarding NPD and the way they are related by following innovative doctrines appealing to creativity. Within this paper and through the analysis of the different fields investigated, a diagrammatic model was proposed contemplating concepts and relations between them. In order to analyze the feasibility of the implementation of this same diagrammatic model in an industrial environment, a case study was presented in a company that uses TRIZ, and through a conclusive analysis, it is verified that the proposed model can be used as support in solving problems of an innovative and creative nature inherent to the implementation of new management processes and their improvement.
- Fuzzy logic model to support risk assessment in innovation ecosystemsPublication . Abreu, António; Moleiro Martins, José; Calado, João Manuel FerreiraNowadays, enterprises in global markets must achieve high levels of performance and competitiveness to stay “alive". According to several authors and as frequently mentioned by reports of practical case studies, one of the most relevant sources of competitive advantage is the innovation capacity. The identification and quantification of the existing or potential innovation risks in a collaborative environment, is an important element for the wide adoption of the innovation ecosystem paradigm. However, models to understand the innovation risks in a collaborative environment are lacking. To address this issue, this paper introduces an approach based on a qualitative assessment, including a quantitative basis, whose development was supported by fuzzy logic for analyzing the level of risk in co-innovation projects. Finally, based on experimental results from a Portuguese collaborative network, a discussion about the benefits and challenges found are discussed.
- Methodologies and tools to support design and development of new productsPublication . Dias, Ana; Abreu, António; Matias, JoãoNowadays, companies, even the small ones, need to use more efficient working methods such as "transnational." The market may still be local or regional, but the competition is global. To be competitive, companies need to develop innovative products and introduce them to the market at an acceptable price, in proper time and with a higher quality level. According to some authors, the survival strategy of the companies is related to the development of methodologies that are able to design, develop and provide, through efficient processes, innovative products and high quality. In this context, this paper aims to classify and characterize the main methodologies and tools used in new products development. This aims are supported by the graphs theory that is briefly addressed.

- System thinking shaping innovation ecosystemsPublication . Abreu, António; Urze, PaulaOver the last few decades, there has been a trend to build innovation platforms as enablers for groups of companies to jointly develop new products and services. As a result, the notion of co-innovation is getting wider acceptance. However, a critical issue that is still open, despite some efforts in this area, is the lack of tools and models that explain the synergies created in a co-innovation process. In this context, the present paper aims at discussing the advantages of applying a system thinking approach to understand the mechanisms associated with co-innovation processes. Finally, based on experimental results from a Portuguese co-innovation network, a discussion on the benefits, challenges and difficulties found are presented and discussed.
