Foram consultadas as bases Psycinfo, Psycarticles, Psycbooks, Psychology & Behavioral Science Collection, EJS E-Journal, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Medline, e Academic Search Complete, utilizando os descritores 'multiple sclerosis' e 'quality of life', para localizar artigos publicados no período 1997-2007. ABSTRACT - Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the chronic neurological disease that most affects young adults; 80% of patients experience a transition towards persistent disability, hence the need to assess their quality of life (QoL). The aim of the study was to review studies that assess QoL in patients with multiple sclerosis, inquiring on the instruments used and their psychometric features. Articles published from 1997 through 2007 were searched for by means of key words 'multiple sclerosis' and 'quality of life' in databases Psycinfo, Psycarticles, Psycbooks, Psychology & Behavioral Science Collection, EJS E-Journal, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Medline, and Academic Search Complete. From the 1,376 studies found, after abstract reading those that reported on instruments with poor psychometric properties and/or were little referred were excluded. A total of 461 articles were selected, of which 267 reported using generic instruments and 194, MS-specific ones. Among the 7 instruments reported by the studies as having good psychometric characteristics (2 generic, five MS-specific), the most used is the SF-36 (by 237 studies). All instruments have shown adequate psychometric properties and a high degree of reliability, hence may be used to assess QoL in subjects with multiple sclerosis both in clinic and research.
- Peak force in familial amyloidotic polyneuropathyPublication . Tomás, Maria Teresa; Santa-Clara, Helena; Monteiro, Estela; Cabri, Jan; Freire, António; Barroso, EduardoFamilial Amyloidotic Polyneuropathy FAP)- A neurodegenerative disease related with systemic deposition of amyloid fibers mainly at the level of the peripheral nervous system. Clinically, the disease is characterized by an autonomous sensitive-motor neuropathy, beginning nearly always in foot, and subsequently involving the hands. Purpose: Compare the levels of hand grip strength (peak force) in FAP patients with (FAPT) or without (FAPNT) liver transplant and in a healthy group (HG).
- 7th ICORIAPublication .
- Identification and control of the AWS using neural network modelsPublication . Valério, Duarte; Mendes, Mário J. G. C.; Beirão, Pedro; Costa, José Sá daThe Archimedes Wave Swing (AWS) is a a fully-submerged Wave Energy Converter (WEC), that is to say, a device that converts the energy of sea waves into electricity. A first prototype of the AWS has already been built and tested. In this paper, neural network (NN) models for this AWS prototype are developed. NNs are then used together with proven control strategies (phase and amplitude control, internal model control and switching control) to maximise energy production. Simulations show an yearly average electricity production increase of 160% over the performance of the original AWS controller.
- Experimental results on electrorheology of liquid crystalline polymer solutionsPublication . Neves, S.; Leal, Catarina R.; Cidade, M. T.The electrorheological (ER) effect is known as the enhancement of the apparent viscosity upon apphcation of an external electric field. Suspensions of polarizable particles in non-conducting solvents are the most studied electrorheological fluids, however, liquid crystalline materials may also present ER effect as long as their dielectric anisotropy is positive. In the liquid crystalline state of a positive dielectric anisotropy, the application of the electric field makes the director align perpendicular to the fiow direction, thus increasing the apparent viscosity. In this work results of two liquid crystalline polymer solutions, acetoxypropylcellulose (APC) in dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and poly-y-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG) in 1,4-dioxane, presenting opposite behavior upon application of the electric field, will be presented. APC/DMAc (negative dielectric anisotropy) presents a decrease of the apparent viscosity upon application of the electric field, as expected, while PBLG/l,4-dioxane (positive dielectric anisotropy) presents the opposite behavior. For this last solution we will present the shear fiow curves for different electric fields in function of polymer molecular weight and solution concentration.

- Analysis and simulation of a-Si Ha-SiC HPINIP structures for color image detectionPublication . Fantoni, Alessandro; Fernandes, Miguel; Vygranenko, Yuri; Vieira, ManuelaIt is presented in this paper a study on the photo-electronic properties of multi layer a-Si: H/a-SiC: H p-i-n-i-p structures. This study is aimed to give an insight into the internal electrical characteristics of such a structure in thermal equilibrium, under applied Was and under different illumination condition. Taking advantage of this insight it is possible to establish a relation among-the electrical behavior of the structure the structure geometry (i.e. thickness of the light absorbing intrinsic layers and of the internal n-layer) and the composition of the layers (i.e. optical bandgap controlled through percentage of carbon dilution in the a-Si1-xCx: H layers). Showing an optical gain for low incident light power controllable by means of externally applied bias or structure composition, these structures are quite attractive for photo-sensing device applications, like color sensors and large area color image detector. An analysis based on numerical ASCA simulations is presented for describing the behavior of different configurations of the device and compared with experimental measurements (spectral response and current-voltage characteristic).
