Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The volatility of the political system means that political journalism must constantly adapt, especially if unexpected political upheavals are involved. New political contexts impose greater adaptability challenges on journalists, both in maintaining and maintaining relationships with sources and in journalistic practices associated with immediacy, dramatization and pluralism. The initial intention of analysing the editorial space of parliamentary journalism developed in the Media Capital Group's media outlets came up against the occurrence of two unexpected political events at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024. The first governmental event concerned the resignation of Prime Minister António Costa on November 7th of 2023. The second concerns the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic on January 15th of 2024. Faced with an unexpected political situation, the curiosity arose to carry out a study that sought to characterise the editorial space granted to parliamentary reporters during the period when the Assembly of the Republic is not in full session. The work carried out is part of a curricular internship experience at the Media Capital Group's media outlets, TVI and CNN Portugal, between January 8th of 2024 and April 5th of 2024. The research is based on classic and modern documentary research techniques and includes a literature review on parliament, political sources and political journalism. In addition, a content analysis was carried out of all the journalistic work of parliamentary reporters broadcast on Jornal Nacional during the 2024 parliamentary dissolution. The investigative work used non-documentary research techniques, namely participant observation and exploratory interviews with parliamentary reporters from TVI and CNN Portugal. The conclusions of the internship report reveal how the work of parliamentary reporters adapted to the demanding agenda of the political parties, which sought to mobilise the electorate for the 2024 parliamentary elections.
