Abstract(s)
O projeto visa explorar as
características centrais do estilo cinematográfico “Neo-noir”, recorrendo a técnicas narrativas
contradição, a fragmentação narrativa, e a tensão psicológica. A narrativa explora ainda o
audição do álbum conceptual "Moss Side Story" (1989), do compositor britânico Barry
ABSTRACT - This script entitled ‘Beyond the Shadows’ refers to the development of a short fiction film, as part of the Master's Degree in Film Project Development, specializing in cinematic narratives. The project aims to explore the central characteristics of the ‘Neo-noir’ film style, using narrative techniques such as flashbacks and voice-over (V.O.), combined with a plot of high complexity and psychological depth. The script focuses on themes characteristic of neo-noir, such as moral ambiguity, contradiction, narrative fragmentation, and psychological tension. The narrative also explores fear, claustrophobia, and paranoia, with characters whose motivations are unorthodox and loaded with dark memories. The story takes place in a nocturnal urban setting, where the play of light and shadow reflects the complexity of the protagonist's mind: an anti-hero with dubious intentions, caught between the fine line that separates good and evil. The inspiration for this film writing project came from listening to the concept album ‘Moss Side Story’ (1989) by British composer Barry Adamson, known for his extensive work composing soundtracks for films. The dark, contrasting atmosphere of the album cover, as well as the musical content and evocative descriptions of the tracks, provided a crucial basis for creating the universe and tone of this script. The supporting text written by Dave Graney, an Australian musician and composer, on the inside of the album also served as a creative reference (attached). This film script project is particularly relevant in the Portuguese cinema scene, where there are few or no works that approach the Neo-Noir style in such a pronounced way. By combining dark and complex themes, such as anguish, fear, and paranoia, with a narrative that explores the game of seduction between two characters, the story culminates tragically, offering a profound reflection on human fragility and moral ambiguity. Thus, ‘Beyond the Shadows’ contributes to filling a gap in Portuguese cinema by proposing an innovative approach to the neo-noir genre, bringing to the surface timeless issues of identity, power, and emotional destruction.
