Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - This Master's thesis reflects on a practical project developed in the dance field, and focuses on my choreographic process of the dance piece The Weight of a Seed , which premiered on 14 and 15 February 2013, at Centro Cultural Vila Flor in Guimarães, under GUIDANCE Festival, and had further presentations 1st , 2nd , 3rd and 5th of March 2013, at Teatro Maria Matos, in Lisbon. This project is a solo dance performed by myself, with original music by Simon Costa, scenery and costumes by Marta Carreiras, light design by Claudia Rodrigues and dramaturgy by Manuela Pedroso. Due to the nature of this theme, I decided to work in process with local youth (from Guimarães and from Lisbon), in order to receive and share concepts linked to the idea of effort and origin of movement. These young people made the prologue of the play in their respective cities. When starting this process, I had the need to stick the research only the prologue, since, as a choreographer, performer and producer, I felt the necessity to make an exempt analysis and proper distance from the created object. Thus, despite being involved in the entire process, the research is focused on methodological aspects of the prologue, to make this thesis objective. In this way, I restrict the search to these two groups of young people, with different features: two different geographical locations (both within an urban context), and two different types of experience with dance (one on amateur format, and other academically professional). I intend with this thesis to reflect on my creative process, focusing particularly on the work methodology and in what was happening during rehearsals. This process has gone through several components that make up the performing arts – choreography, interpretation, sharing direct work with the community, production. It is therefore very significant to analyze The Weight of a Seed from a point of view of the principles involved, and from the standpoint of the prologue, which formalizes and summarizes these components described, as well as my last fifteen years of work.
