Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - Introduction: Clinical analyses play a vital role in the provision of health care, being the main source of information for prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, and patient monitoring. Any error that occurs during laboratory processing can hurt the patient's outcome. In the prevention of errors, the culture of patient safety (SD) plays a fundamental role. Clinical analysis technicians are health professionals with fundamental activity in a clinical analysis laboratory, so their practices related to patient safety have an impact on reducing the risks for patients. Objective: The main goal of this study was to analyze the perception of the patient safety culture of clinical analysis and public health technicians working in the National Health Service. Methodology: To conduct this quantitative and descriptive study, a mixed questionnaire was used, the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture of the Agency for Healthcare Research - translated and confirmed Portuguese version, together with questions to characterize the sample under study. Demographic data were analysed and the percentages of positive answers for 9 of the 12 dimensions that compose it were determined. The questionnaire was made available via Google Forms, between February 2 and May 14, 2023. Results: 116 valid responses were obtained. The dimension with the best rating corresponds to “teamwork” with 60.8% of positive responses, while the dimensions “supervisor/manager expectations and actions that promote patient safety” and “openness in communication” represented areas for improvement urgently, with 33.9% and 35.2% of positive responses, respectively. Conclusion: his investigation, the first conducted in Portugal for this professional group, allowed us to know the perception of these professionals regarding DS. The dimensions of “non-punitive response to error”, “frequency of notification” and “openness in communication” had an average of lower positive responses. This highlights the need for training in the field of initiative-taking notification and communication. Higher results in “teamwork” proved cooperation and trust among professionals, a decisive factor for making changes and implementing CSD actions.
