Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - Introduction: Central corneal thickness is an important biometric data in the clinical evaluation of patients with ocular hypertension and glaucoma since it influences the measurement of intraocular pressure by the Goldmann method and is an independent risk factor for the development of primary glaucoma of open angle. Objective: Compare corneal central thickness values using ultrasonic pachymetry (Accutome, AccuPach V) and Pentacam HR (Oculus, Inc.). Method: Intraocular pressure was measured with the blow tonometer (Visuplan 500, ZEISS) and corneal central thickness was measured in 43 patients. Nine consecutive measurements were made with ultrasonic pachymetry and with Pentacam HR. The Student's t-Test was used to compare the mean of the measurements obtained with the devices. Results: The values found for the mean and standard deviation of the central corneal thickness were 566.14 ± 33.47 μm for the ultrasonic pachymetry and 559.03 ± 33.11 μm for the Pentacam HR. The difference between the means of measurements obtained with the two instruments was of 7.11 μm with a confidence interval of 3.50 to 10.71 μm (95% confidence level), which is statistically significant (p<0.05). The correlation coefficient obtained for the measurements performed with the two pachymetry instruments was 0.87. Conclusion: The values obtained with both instruments presented a good correlation. However, there is a statistically significant difference between them, so they are not interchangeable, and those obtained with the ultrasonic pachymetry are superior.
