Abstract(s)
Este Projecto Artístico centrou-se na criação de um conjunto de pequenas obras que
possuem a capacidade de sugestão emotiva e dramática comum na música para cinema,
recorrendo à tecnologia de instrumentos virtuais. O domínio da música e emoções não é
consensual, mas, ainda assim, existem estudos científicos que apontam para a
possibilidade da música exprimir e induzir emoções através de mecanismos
relacionados com associações. Estas relações podem ser feitas ao nível de elementos
propriamente musicais, de simbolismos ou recorrendo à memória. A ‘biografia musical’,
isto é, o histórico auditivo do sujeito parece ter uma importância fundamental nas
associações que podem, efectivamente, ser estabelecidas e, por conseguinte, na
interacção entre música e emoções. Tal entendimento será útil para o compositor que
queira reforçar a expressão dramática de uma narrativa cinematográfica através da
música. Este Relatório aponta alguns motivos pelos quais o minimalismo tem sido
usado na música para cinema e, ainda, para a utilidade dos instrumentos virtuais
enquanto elemento mediador entre a simultânea expressão e indução de emoções no
processo criativo, bem como a importância que têm assumido no meio audiovisual.
Mais ainda, procurou-se, com a obra criada, demonstrar certas teorias da psicologia
relativa a música e emoções, e também mostrar algumas fragilidades presentes na
concepção de ideias que estabelecem ligações pouco flexíveis entre elementos musicais
e respectiva expressão emocional. Concluiu-se que, neste domínio, as variáveis
existentes quer na música, quer no sujeito que a ouve, são demasiado vastas, pelo que
tal deve ser tido em consideração no estudo desta área.
ABSTRACT - This Artistic Project focused in the creation of a set of short pieces that have the capacity of an emotional and dramatic suggestion that is common in film music, using virtual instruments technology. There is no consensus in the field of music and emotions but, nonetheless, there are scientific studies that point towards the ability of music express and induce emotions through mechanisms related to associations. These relationships can be set at a musical, symbolical or memory level. The ‘musical biography’ , i.e., the hearing past of the subject seems to have a major role in the associations that can be established effectively, thus in the interaction between music and emotions. Such acknowledgment may be useful for the composer wishing to emphasise the dramatic expression of a film narrative through music. This Report points towards some reasons why minimalism has thrived in film music and, furthermore, to the usefulness of virtual instruments as an element that mediates the simultaneous expression and induction of emotions in the creative process, but also the importance they have assumed in the audiovisual media. Moreover, this work was a mean to try to demonstrate some psychology theories relative to music and emotions, and also to point the weakness of those ideas that form rigid connections between musical elements and corresponding emotional expression. It has been brought to a conclusion that the existing variables present in music and each subject are vast to a point that can not be disregarded in any research in this domain.
