- Evaluation of employees fruit consumption and its relation with Body Mass IndexPublication . Duarte, J.; Costa, Vânia; Calixto, C.; Carolino, Elisabete; Mendes, LinoThe fruit intake in Portugal is below recommended levels despite evidence of the health benefits of regular consumption. Research indicates that there is an inverse relationship between fruit consumption and excessive weight. The workplace may be an ideal location for nutrition and health interventions, for example, in the context of occupational health, because of the potential health benefits for employees and associated decreases in absenteeism and sick leave. Employees spend a lot of their time at work which can represent a good setting for interventions to promote fruit consumption and weight control. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the fruit intake status of employees and to examine the relationship between fruit intake and Body Mass Index (BMI).
- Aspergillus spp. prevalence in one Portuguese hospital: a reason to be worried?Publication . Viegas, Carla; Dias, Marta; Almeida, Beatriz; Paciência, Inês; Rufo, João Cavaleiro; Teixeira, João Paulo; Pereira, CristianaAspergillus genus is responsible for over 80% of pulmonary invasive fungal infections in humans. Invasive aspergillosis, caused by Aspergillus fumigatus in 80% of the cases, is the most common invasive fungal infection. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Aspergillus genus in a Portuguese hospital, using a wide sampling approach combining active and passive methods. A total of 15 sampling sites were defined, distributed by the different hospital areas - emergency room, day hospital, internment ward, operating room, and outpatient area. Active (air impaction) and passive (surfaces swabs, settled the dust, filters from heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and electrostatic dust collectors (EDC) sampling methods were applied. Samples were impacted/washed and seeded on malt extract agar (MEA) supplemented with chloramphenicol (0.05%) and dichloran-glycerol agar (DG18).
- Influence of femtosecond laser surface nanotexturing on the friction behavior of silicon sliding against PTFEPublication . Alves-Lopes, Isabel; Almeida, Amélia; Oliveira, Vítor; Vilar, RuiThe aim of the present work was to investigate the influence of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) produced by femtosecond laser on the friction behavior of silicon sliding on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in unlubricated conditions. Tribological tests were performed on polished and textured samples in air using a ball-on-flat nanotribometer, in order to evaluate the friction coefficient of polished and textured silicon samples, parallel and perpendicularly to the LIPSS orientation. In the polished specimens, the friction coefficient decreases with testing time at 5 mN, while it increases slightly at 25 mN. It also decreases with increasing applied load. For the textured specimens, the friction coefficient tends to decrease with testing time in both sliding directions studied. In the parallel sliding direction, the friction coefficient decreases with increasing load, attaining values similar to those measured for the polished specimen, while it is independent of the applied load in the perpendicular sliding direction, exhibiting values lower than in the two other cases. These results can be explained by variations in the main contributions to friction and in the wear mechanisms. The influence of the temperature increase at the interface and the consequent changes in the crystalline phases of PTFE are also considered.
- Fungal biomass detection on HVAC filters as good predictors for viable bioburdenPublication . Viegas, Carla; Almeida, Beatriz; Monteiro, Ana; Marchand, G.Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) filters have been successfully used to characterize the bioburden of indoor environments. This passive sampling approach uses the HVAC filters as integrated, long-term samplers of particle-bound contaminants, such as fungi and bacteria. Furthermore, fungal biomass detection as an analyses approach of HVAC filters can be a useful methodology, since molecular based-studies have already linked bioburden to health outcomes. Thus, the aim of this study was to verify if fungal biomass can be a good predictor for bacterial and fungal counts in HVAC filters.
- A comprehensive review on analysis of nanocomposites: from manufacturing to properties characterizationPublication . M, Vinyas; Athul, S. J.; Harursampath, D.; Loja, Amélia; Trung, Nguyen ThoiThe study of nanocomposites in its diverse scientific fields has increased dramatically over the years with numerous theoretical and experimental techniques emerging and redefining the process of synthesis, analysis and cost control methodologies of nanocomposites. The present review is an attempt to identify the various methodologies, techniques, theories and formulations that are used in nanocomposite technology. As an overall qualitative appreciation it is possible to conclude that the diversity of processes involved in the manufacture and analysis of nanocomposites, impacts them differently, influencing their physical nature, chemical behaviour, biological interactions, optical properties and production costs which consequently may introduce some constraints to their application. Hence, a critical review on the best methodology would remain inconclusive. This work intends to collect and relate publications on different fields of the nanocomposites technology and application fields, aiming at contributing to achieve a wide perspective of different aspects of the nanocomposites processes and theories and with this, being an aid to ease and raise the production and analysis of nanocomposites to a higher level.
- Occupational exposure to monoclonal antibodies in Portuguese health units: are there reasons for concern?Publication . Costa-Veiga, Ana; Viegas, SusanaBackground: The use of monoclonal antibodies (MABs) has been increasing in healthcare, namely, in the treatment of malignant and non-malignant diseases. These molecules are widely used in monotherapy and in chemotherapy cycles along with cytotoxic drugs. Currently, the use is also increasing in veterinary practice. Thus, a considerable number of health professionals (e.g. pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, nurses, veterinarians, physicians, and others) can be exposed to this new therapeutic class. Aim: To give an overview of the main guidelines to safe handling of MABs worldwide; To estimate the occupational risk of handling MABs in three Portuguese health institutions.
Old buildings convey to the present messages from the past about the materials and techniques, often centenarians, used by the generations that preceded us. The present text presents the constructive techniques of wood in buildings, as transmitted by its stakeholders. This transmission occurs either by written records and published books or by the visible evidence of the constructions still existing. The text focuses on the construction techniques that came to be implemented after the great earthquake of Lisbon in 1755, highlighting the central role that wood occupied in the complex structural systems, forming a joint with high resistance against earthquakes, which was designated as "pombalino cage". It is also presented the way in which these constructive systems were successively simplified throughout the 19th century, until they were no longer built, in the first half of the 20th century, with the entrance of reinforced concrete in the construction industry. The text begins with the presentation of the main constructive periods in the Lisbon and south-central area of Portugal, as defined by several authors. It is then described the specific technology of wood application in the main structural elements: walls, floors and roofs. Emphasis is given to the use of wood on the walls and to the way it interconnects with stone masonry and aerial lime, as with floors, promoting the dissipation of energy and protection of the inhabitants during the occurrence of an earthquake. Therefore, it is intended with this text to make known a constructive system of the 18th century which, because it is highly intelligent, continues to this day. Likewise, it intends to launch a discussion about the possibility of using today's materials, using the same structural principles of the so-called "Pombalino construction".
