Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: This stage is part of the 4th edition of the master degree in dance teaching of the Superior Dance School of Lisbon and aims to be, first of all, a reflection on the role of Classical Dance Technique within the contemporary dance in general. In this sense, one of the main goals of this work was to study the place of the Classical Dance Technique in the formation and training of the 'contemporary dancer', identifying the elements of this technique that can be considered as part of the foundations of any dance student, and also the elements that are common to contemporary techniques. And even those elements that are not common but continue to be useful to them, or vice versa, considering that there will be elements of contemporary dance techniques that may be interesting to apply in classical dance technique lessons. Another of the main goals of this study is to outline the basis of a new discipline of classical dance technique for 'non-classical' dancers or dance students, who want to escape from the canons of traditional methodologies. Aligning our thinking with the concept of specialization defended by Xarez (2012), in this case applied to the professional contemporary dance specific field. This discipline may also be used in popular dance, even in amateur level. Based on these two goals and timing - moments of observation and teaching - the methodology used was to note and reflect on the elements mentioned in the first goal, especially during the period of observation, and then in the teaching period, trying to apply assumptions of these same elements, adding other proposals for the approximation of classical technique to contemporary dance. As host school, the Lugar Presente Dance School in Viseu was chosen, as a school that have its origins in a contemporary dance company (the Paulo Ribeiro’s), and combining in a very balanced way the two training components - classical and contemporary. This school seemed to us to be the ideal ground place for this type of research.
