This dissertation analyzes the reasons why adults choose to attend theatre classes in a postwork context. The theoretical framework encompasses amateur theatre, community theatre, and their connection with the concept of leisure, particularly Robert Stebbins’ Serious Leisure Perspective, as well as the relationships between theatrical practice and mental health. The research followed a mixed methodology: semi-structured interviews were conducted with theatre teachers, and questionnaire surveys were administered to students who attend theatre classes outside professional contexts, balancing these activities with their work routines and personal lives. The results reveal that the main motivations for participating in these activities include the need for personal expression, the appreciation of emotional well-being, the development of interpersonal skills, and the desire to be part of an artistic group or community. It was also found that theatre contributes to improved self-esteem and confidence, serving as a space for socialization and balance in the face of everyday demands. It can be concluded that engaging in theatre practice after working hours, in addition to serving as a form of leisure, plays a transformative role by providing meaningful experiences that strengthen personal identity, foster social cohesion, and promote mental health.
