Abstract(s)

This article analyses the live broadcasting of the funeral of the Portuguese Prime Minister Francisco Sá Carneiro, which happened on the 6th of December 1980. The ceremony got direct broadcasting (during seven hours) by the Portuguese public television. The funeral was organized and broadcasted live the day before a presidential election. That was the subject at that time of a debate. Therefore, several political observers especially those related with left wing parties, argued that it was an attempt by the governmental parties and public television to influence the voters in favour of the rightist candidate. Public television (stated owned) sustained that it had only the meaning of a national tribute to a political leader. The ceremony was a mix of traditional religious ritual and a political demonstration with partisan flags and posters. This paper links the formal analysis of the images to the historical and political context of the event.
