Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - Introduction: Physical activity (PA) is essential for a healthy life and quality of life, representing a fundamental role in the physical and mental health of individuals. At the same time, the physical therapist, through the promotion of PA and exercise, can improve mental health (MH), an essential factor in the current pandemic, which triggered crises of anxiety, fear, and depression. Objective: To verify the physical activity levels of Portuguese physical therapists (PPT) and their association with MH during the time of the pandemic. It was also intended to investigate the knowledge that PPT have about the guidelines of PA for health in adults. Methods: An online questionnaire was applied through social networks to all PTs between October 21, 2021, and January 14, 2022. It contained the IPAQ-SF questionnaire to assess PA levels, the Goldberg General Health Questionnaire of 28 items (GHQ-28) that assess the levels of MH (whose amplitude differs between 0 – 84), for subjective well-being the WHO Well-being Index (WHO-5) (values between 0% and 100%). And questions of general characterization and knowledge of PA guidelines. Results: The sample totaled 286 respondents (82% women), with a mean age of 33 years. Of the total responses 82% practice PA, of these 45% have moderate levels of PA, and 19% vigorous. It is noted that individuals in these categories have lower values in the GHQ-28 and higher in the WHO-5. 66% of the PTs were also analyzed with the perception of knowledge of the PA guidelines, and of these 69% demonstrated knowledge about them. We also found that individuals who show better MH also have better subjective well-being (r= -0.571, p=0.000). Conclusion: The data obtained showed that Physiotherapists mostly present moderate levels of PA, that this positively influences the MH, and the feeling of well-being of individuals, fundamental factors given the pandemic situation. It was also found that the PT in order to provide better service to users, and to the community, about the practice of regular PA, requires a greater knowledge of the current guidelines for PA.
