Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - This document is intended to represent the report of the internship practice, foreseen in Internship I and II curricular units of the Master's Degree in Dance Teaching (10th edition), Escola Superior de Dança – Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa. The internship was implemented at Balleteatro Escola Profissional with classes A and B of the 2nd grade of the Professional Contemporary Dance Interpreter Course. Starting from teaching in the context of the Contemporary Dance discipline, and in accordance with its syllabus, we utilized the repertoire piece “The Roots” by Kader Attou (2013) as a stimulus for the development of students' choreographic composition skills. The goal was to enhance improvisation and composition skills using the common points between contemporary dance and Hip Hop as a movement basis. As this is a piece where the mentioned styles were fused, technical contents of these two vocabularies were transmitted, thus increasing the students' movement lexicon. We use the concept of I.D.E.A as a choreographic method. developed by Lavender (2006) combined with several improvisation and movement manipulation tools and Butterworth’s didaticdemocratic model. During the classes we addressed concepts related to Hip Hop Culture, such as freestyle and cypher in order to familiarize students with the genesis of a Culture that has become commercial and often undervalued in the context of dance. Regarding the research methodology, we opted for Action-Research, so that we could adopt a constant reflective practice, and the data collection instruments we chose were questionnaires, logbooks and video recordings. Through the analysis of the entire project and the results obtained, it was concluded that by using a repertoire piece as a stimulus, we were able to significantly improve both the desire for and the students' ability to improvise and compose. It was also concluded that providing students with contact with different types of vocabulary helps to improve their creative and performative skills.
