ABSTRACT - This internship report, developed as part of the Master's Degree in Dance Teaching at the Escola Superior de Dança of the Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa, focuses on the application of imagery as a methodological tool in the teaching of Classical Dance Technique and in the interpretation of an excerpt of a Classical Dance repertoire from 1895. The internship took place during the 2024/2025 academic year with the 5th grade class of the Specialised Artistic Education at the Conservatório Regional Silva Marques in Alhandra, Portugal. The main objective of this pedagogical intervention was to stimulate the artistic expressivity of the students, using imagery as a tool to aid the teaching-learning process. Considering the importance of this tool in the context of dance, the role of metaphor and mental imagery in the internalisation of a technique, expressiveness and the connection between intention and movement was studied. Continuous observation, communication with the students and dialogue with the cooperating teachers, as well as the methodological approach applied in this internship, in this case the Royal Academy of Dance methodology, were essential in highlighting the relevance of a holistic perspective in the training of dancers. This approach resulted in the learning of the Dance of the Little Swans in its entirety, one of the excerpts from the 1895 version of the classical repertoire Swan Lake, choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The version of the excerpt, performed by The Royal Ballet and Opera, was choreographed by Liam Scarlett, inspired by Lev Ivanov's best-known version. Analytical reflection on the results obtained in the internship, led to the conclusion that the strategy implemented resulted in improved execution of arm and head movements. The learning of the Dance of the Little Swans consolidated the technical and artistic details implemented during the technique classes. This report is a critical reflection on pedagogical practices that value creativity in the use of imagery and expressivity as essential skills to be developed during the academic career of a young dancer.
