Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: For a long time now, coming from several quadrants, protests have arised against the linguistic mistakes found in Portugal’s press. Having as a starting point the analysis of Público, Correio da Manhã and Expresso, this dissertation intends to observe whether Portuguese newspapers respect the language’s norms, to find out how frequently do mistakes occur, which grammatical areas are the most problematic and which conditions facilitate the emergence of linguistic deviations. To do so, the newspaper kind, the periodicity, the section, the articles’ authority, the journalistic genre, the day of the week and the text area were considered. Interviews were also done with the purpose of getting to know the revising process in every one of the newspapers constituting the observation corpus of this paper and, in doing so, interpreting the results in a more sustained way. It was concluded that certain labor dynamics (such as the fluctuation of the amount of professionals present in the newsroom) and some technical aspects inherent to journalistic writing are closely related to the level of the press’s linguistic correction. It was also clear that online editions present a substantially higher amount of mistakes than paper editions, which shows how important the copydesks’ function is and how impactful the dictatorship of instantaneous information is.
