Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: In the 2016-2017 academic year, there were 3,340 students studying at the Lisbon Accounting and Business School (ISCAL). 77 of these students were incoming Erasmus students coming to study at ISCAL under the framework of the Erasmus+ programme. Regardless of the flow of international students that occur every year at ISCAL, there is no systematic, digital and non-presential way of contact in any language other than Portuguese. Hence, the opportunity arose to produce a tool that allowed this need to be filled. With the following realizations, that this group is always constituted by young people, that it is especially among this age group that mobile phones assume today a prominent position as an accessory that accompanies and completes us, that the world of apps populates the use that we make of mobile phones today as software that adds value to the user’s experience, the purpose of this project work fitted into this digital harmony and comfort of an incoming Erasmus student from ISCAL being able to – from the palm of his hand – access and manage his academic life by means of a mobile application in a vehicular, common language: English. One of the main goals of the research was to assess the relevance it would have to students the use of an app that would allow them the management of their academic life during the mobility study period using their smartphone. We also intended to identify the most appreciated features, within the scope of its use. This study followed a quantitative approach with an exploratory character, based on primary data, in which statistical methods and procedures where used to obtain conclusions from the data analysed. We considered it pertinent to conduct a questionnaire to a sample of the target population in order to collect data that would allow us to assess the established goals. To do so, we used a structured questionnaire, as the instrument of analysis. All incoming Erasmus students from the academic years 2013-2014 to 2016-2017 were contacted, totalising 229 individuals and resulting in 112 valid questionnaires. The results demonstrated that there is effectively room to improve the current communication channels since most of the respondents considered the smartphone app as the best way to manage the period of academic mobility. Most of the respondents also found it useful to have an app for this purpose. Accordingly, we were able to confirm the relevance of creating this app for managing the academic life of incoming Erasmus students.
