Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease and falls are a debilitating problem for these people. Falls prevention can lighten socioeconomic burdens and decrease adverse effects. Objective: to investigate the effectiveness of physiotherapy in preventing falls in PD. Method: A systematic review was carried out, following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). We searched in the PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Trials, SciELO, and PEDro databases. Only RCT (randomized controlled trials) studies were included. The selection of studies and evaluation of the methodological quality (PEDro scale) were conducted by 2 evaluators, independently. Results: The search resulted in a total of 104 studies, 5 of which were included after the application of the eligibility criteria. In general, the rate of falls decreased in the study groups. Gait speed increased significantly in two of the studies, in the study groups. Step length and stride length improved in two of the studies, in the study groups. Conclusion: There is evidence that balance training, gait training, strengthening of the upper and lower limbs, and education for the prevention of falls is effective in preventing falls in Parkinson’s Disease.
