Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The following thesis aims to reveal how the Arab Spring event was represented in the award-winning images of the World Press Photo 2012, by analyzing the visual narrative of those images. This work intends to show that photographs, due to their features and formal options, transmit certain discourses, meanings and ideological values. Therefore, we consider that journalistic photographs, though they present themselves as objective portraits of the world, are subjective constructions that limit the perception of individuals and influence their social practices. The images analyzed in this work were distinguished by World Press Photo, one of the most prestigious photojournalism contests, which dignifies winning photographers and aims to promote high quality standards in news photography. The photographic works, by being awarded, acquire huge visibility in the media, but also through the travelling exhibition, which reaches dozens of countries, every year. The award-winning images of the World Press Photo 2012, which also circulated around the world, do not portray the Arab Spring in all its spectrum. Throughout this work,we will show that those photographs are just selections of certain moments, which convey certain understandings regarding the Arab Revolt.
