Abstract(s)

When one faces a screen to know what is up today, we are simultaneously and foremost reading our world and ourselves, participating in a transaction that embodies different proficiencies, which determine the narrative of our perception and that of the community around us. To know how communication and critical thinking, but also attitudes, and values are daily mobilized among youngsters are part of the objectives of the “Academy for Reading the World: Journalism, Communication and I”, which is a research project - selected as one of the Gulbenkian Academies for Knowledge in 2019 - dedicated to exploring and explaining contemporary communication and media frameworks, but also to develop key social and emotional skills, namely , communication, self-regulation and critical thinking. The research team from six Portuguese academic institutions, specialized in communication and journalism studies, conceived an immersive media agenda, it mobilized teachers and young students from secondary schools of the community and collaboratively have been working with students, researchers, and journalists nourishing an interdisciplinary approach to media literacy amongst young adults (14y-25y). The purpose of this paper is to present results from the two first years of this experience and to argue that it is imperative to listen to what youngsters are paying attention to and encourage them to question their information bubbles to avoid an infotainment network clout that relies on social sharing to survive and dismisses those who are supposed to keep a check on social abuse.
