Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: This dissertation seeks to analyse the national news coverage of the 2024 European Handball Championship, looking at the printed sports and general news press, as well as television news. In a Portuguese media universe in which football is the predominant sport, which is also reflected in academic research into sports journalism, this work focuses its attention on another sport, with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of its journalistic coverage. Handball was chosen because it is the third team sport with the most federated players in Portugal and, in particular, the European Championship, because it was the biggest international event in this sport in 2024, in which the Portuguese national team took part. So, based on the starting question “How much space was given to the 2024 Handball European Championship in generalist and sports newspapers, and TV news?’, we studied the news pieces in the sports newspapers A Bola, Record and O Jogo, the generalist newspapers Público, Correio da Manhã and Expresso and the prime-time elevision news programmes of SIC, TVI and RTP1, between the 10th and the 30th of January 2024. Through the content analysis carried out, it was possible to conclude that the Portuguese national team was the main focus of the coverage of the competition. There were also clear differences between the treatment of information between the sports press and the general press, and the Portuguese team only received some prominence when it achieved positive results. It was also concluded there was a lack of investment, at different levels, in the coverage of the European Championship.
