Abstract(s)
This Report is developed within the scope of the Curricular Unit (CU) “Supervised Teaching Practice (STP II)”, in makes part of the 2nd Semester of the 2nd Year of the study plan of the Professional Master's Degree in Teaching at the 1st Cycle of Basic Education (CTB) and of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education, of the Escola Superior de Educação de Lisboa, Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa. It is organized in two distinct parts: the first refers to STP II in the 1st and 2nd Cycle of Basic Education, and the second refers to the presentation of the study, carried out in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education with the main objective of investigating potentialiaties of experimental and laboratorial activities for the development of children’s competences and learning. In this sense, it was intended to identify which competences can be developed, with the implementation of experimental and laboratorial activities, and to identify the potentialiaties of experimental activities for the development of learning. The used methodology was of a mixed nature, using mostly qualitative data collection and processing techniques, but also quantitative ones. A case study with action-research characteristics was carried out with two 6th grade classes. To collect the data, the qualitative documental analysis of the student`s productions and participant observation were the used techniques. However, a questionnaire was also administered before and after the didactic intervention, and the results obtained were analyzed using the Microsoft Excel tool, for descriptive statistical analysis of the data and calculation of answers’ absolute and relative frequencies. The results of this case study confirm that it is possible, through the implementation of experimental and laboratory activities, to develop social competences, such as cooperation and autonomy, and procedural competences, such as observation, and data registration and interpretation. It also demonstrates that these activities allow for a better consolidation of prior knowledge and enhance students' representation abilities.
