ABSTRACT: Sports journalism has evolved towards discredit. The idea perpetuated is that this section is the poor relative of newsrooms. Still, sports journalism must be guided by the same standards as other areas of activity. Reporting, although for different reasons, has also suffered disinvestment. This work merges these two axes, analysing how sports reporting is surviving and how without it journalism is weakened. So, to do that, the case of The Athletic and a specific event, the 2022 World Cup, in Qatar, were looked at. Although in a region of the world with concrete challenges, the publication's reporters sought to ensure that the coverage provided was unequivocally different from that which could be provided remotely. While the organization of the competition tried to cover up inconvenient truths – deaths of workers in the construction of stadiums, lack of living conditions for migrant labour, disrespect for LGBT rights –, independent information made them evident to the public.
