| dc.description.abstract | Professor Elihu Katz honored me with a comment about my article “An unsuccessful transformative media event”. The “unsuccessful” means, under my interpretation, that the political and television organizers wanted to have an effect in the election results benefit of the candidate supported by the prime minister Sá-Carneiro and by the centre right and rightist parties. My opinion is very cautious, because as Elihu Katz remarks, we had no opinion polls before and after the funeral, but we can see that President Eanes won election and Sá Carneiro’s candidate did not. The short term effect was the unsuccessful. If the short term effect was related to the presidential election and it was unsuccessful, we cannot say the same about the long run effect. As I told in the article, the long run effect was the “consecration of the first hero of the Portuguese democratic right wing”. After 48 years of dictatorship, the Portuguese democratic regime needed a new modern right. Sá Carneiro represented a leader for that new right wing. A great (and conservative) Portuguese writer, Agustina Bessa Luís, once said, in a novel, that Francisco Sá Carneiro “understood that the Portuguese were disenchanted with the Revolution that was not only the liberation from a servitude but also an unfounded promise of happiness”. | pt_PT |
