Abstract(s)
This report was conceived within the scope of the Curricular Unit of Supervised Teaching Practice II, of the Master's Degree in Teaching the 1st Cycle of Primary Education and Mathematics and Natural Sciences in the 2nd Cycle of Primary Education. This document is organized into two parts. The first part includes a brief description of the pedagogical practices developed in the internship contexts in the 1st and 2nd Cycle of Primary Education, as well as a critical and reflective analysis of these practices in both contexts. The second part focuses on the presentation of a study related to the topic "The use of Cartoons as a strategy to promote Critical Thinking in Natural Sciences". The study aims to assess the impact of activities with cartoons on the development of Critical Thinking in 2nd Cycle of Primary Education students, in Science, and analyze the importance given by students to activities that use cartoons in their learning. The research is an exploratory study and constitutes a case study and uses a quantitative approach. It can also be considered an action research study as it aims to enhance the teaching-learning process, involves a critical reflection about the relevance of cartoons in this process, and the learning activities had several changes to improve their effectiveness. The study involved eighteen students in a mixed class of 5th and 6th grades. Five cartoon activities were applied to explore different Critical Thinking skills, over a period of five weeks. A brief questionnaire was also administered to check students’ opinions about this kind of activities in Science learning. The results of the study concluded that cartoons promoted the development of Critical Thinking skills, as a statistically significant improvement in student performance was achieved. This study also allowed to conclude that students have a positive opinion regarding the use of cartoons in the learning of Science.
