Abstract(s)
Departamento do 1º Ciclo, enquanto órgão intermédio na organização escolar. Neste
fundamentais para o exercício do cargo de Coordenador de Departamento do 1º Ciclo;
escolas.
escolar.
ABSTRACT With the study “The leadership of intermediary bodies in the Primary Education Department” we aim to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of teachers’ perspectives on leadership and the coordinator’s performance in the Primary Education Department, as an intermediate body in the school organisation. In this sense, the following objectives have been defined: (1) knowing the ways of selecting the Department Coordinators (DC), which teachers consider most appropriate for the performance of duties; (2) identifying the motivation teachers consider fundamental for the duties to be carried out by the coordinator of the Department of Primary Education; (3) identifying the tasks assigned by the several parties to the Department Coordinators; (4) knowing the various parties’ perspectives on leadership within the intermediate structures; (5) identifying the profile teachers consider necessary for the performance of duties of the Department Coordinator, and (6) knowing the methods of communication within the Department, as well as between the different structures of the Schools Grouping. To achieve those goals, we started from the several authors’ opinion about leadership within school context, and we used a methodology of a mixed nature. Thus, we carried out a case study using a questionnaire survey, which analysis gave rise to an interview script for deepening some aspects. Later, the semi-structured interviews were subjected to content analysis. The results in the Schools Grouping under study show that the surveyed teachers value professional skills that they consider determinant for the tasks to be performed by the Department Coordinator (problem-solving and leadership skills) to the detriment of purely administrative aspects. According to the surveyees, this leadership should be based on collaborative and trustworthy relationships. In addition to this type of skills, the teachers consider that the Department Coordinators should support the teachers, organise the department in a participative way, and involve teachers in the school organisation.
