Abstract(s)
A última
Sociocultural community development training at higher education level follows a multidisciplinary matrix, well rooted in social and human behavioural sciences. Nevertheless, it is essential that sociocultural community development practitioners have a reasonable knowledge of all spheres of culture production, including the arts and the natural sciences. The Seminar of Culture, Arts and Science is a course within a Bologna 1st cycle of studies programme in Sociocultural Community Development of a Portuguese Higher School of Education. This Seminar was oriented in order to increase students‘ awareness on the importance of these areas in their training and presented the same sociocultural phenomena through different viewpoints in a plural and integrated perspective. In this article we proceed with a research that intends to analyse and understand the impact on pre-service sociocultural community development practitioners of activities that use an artwork as a starting point. Also, we intend to evaluate the relevance of the teaching strategies adopted in the Seminar. The artwork chosen was Sofá Aspirina (1997), by Joana Vasconcelos, and a set of activities was created under the title ‗Sofá Aspirina: a training and self-development approach‘. That sculpture was selected because it is a contemporary piece able to be analysed through the lenses of its cultural framework as well as art and science standpoints. The last proposal of the training approach was a comeback to the artwork as a mind challenging mechanism. In this activity each student had to develop a mind challenging artistic project upon an everyday object for which its shape or meaning ought to be modified. In the current study the students‘ project proposals and the students‘ insights on the activities (given during a class discussion and through an individual questionnaire answered later on) were analysed. We present the perception and appreciation that students show about this art creation procedure - in which the shape or meaning of an object is modified -, discussing those in view of a higher education sociocultural community development training that aspires to stimulate in each student the skills required to attain the paramount goals of sociocultural community development: democratising culture and promoting participation in culture.
