Abstract(s)
do séc. XXI.
ABSTRACT Considering the constant social and legislative changes that the teaching career has suffered over the years, teachers are being confronted by new challenges which go far beyond traditional teaching procedures and expertise. In order to face up to these new challenges, nowadays, teachers are forced to acquire new social and psychological skills without which it seems almost impossible to carry out their professional duties, always conditioned by the twenty first century changes. Following this line of reasoning, teachers are invited to develop and lead the process of social transformation (Carneiro, 2003). With reference to the new reality of the teaching career, it seemed to us important to know the current conceptions of the profession and identify the sources of satisfaction and dissatisfaction of teachers. For this study, it was used a qualitative research method with a technique interview to six teachers, who taught different schooling levels and different teaching methods, in one school, in Lisbon. Through the results obtained it is possible to conclude that, generally speaking, teachers at this school have a current negative perception of their profession, due to its characteristics, such as, be a stressful and devaluated profession, or the sense of demotivation of teachers, among others. But, despite the difficulties and setbacks, they show appreciation for the profession and the intention to remain teaching. Regarding this perception, teachers refer to, as sources of dissatisfaction, the social devaluation of the profession, the lack of recognition or the difficulties related to the management of opinions and conflicts with colleagues, the difficulties in teaching, relationship in the classroom and, also, the relationship with parents, among others. As to the sources of satisfaction, the most significant is related to students, such as the process of learning, extracurricular activities or gathering with former students.
