Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT - Guillermo Uribe Holguín (violinist) and Antonio María Valencia (pianist) were two Colombian composers of the first half of the 20th century who shared a similar education, having both studied composition with the renowned teacher and composer Vincent D’Indy at the Schola Cantorum in Paris. These composers made a decisive contribution to the creation of a Colombian classical music identity. At the same time, they had an important role in performance, teaching and divulgation of the western music and European traditions throughout Colombia, especially concerning the music of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Despite their common past, their different ideas in pedagogical matters drove them to a dispute that went through the newspapers and ended up with a division of many of the contemporary musicians in Colombia. This lead to the creation of two conservatory-models: the National Conservatory in Bogotá founded by Uribe Holguín and the Conservatory of Cali founded by Valencia. This work presents research of the written sources that relate to the historic and biographical context of these two composers, providing a description of the composing styles developed by Uribe Holguín and Valencia. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of selected works for violin and piano by the two composers will be presented.
