Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT For some time now the elderly population has been growing in developing countries, especially in Portugal. This growth has led to an increase in studies on the impact of cognitive stimulation since this can help maintain or develop cognitive competences on elderly people. This thesis has taken a qualitative descriptive and exploratory approach though which it is the authors intent to verify in which ways cognitive stimulation is present in animation activities oriented by technicians at residential structures for elderly people. To answer this research problem, this thesis has outlined three specific’s objectives: i) to identify what is the intent of technicians so has to better promote and explain objectives associated with Cognitive Stimulation in the planning of activities; ii) to observe if the strategies and principles of Cognitive Stimulation are or not present in the activities organized by technicians; iii) to analyses if technicians who organized activities mobilize in their speech the dimensions associated with Cognitive Stimulation. The sample used for this study is composed of a collection of twenty activities from five technicians, four from each technician and well as several instruments of collection and analysis of data, specifically planning made by the technicians, observation of activities and semi-structured interviews of the technicians. The collection of this data is required so that it is possible to cross reference. The results of this study give relevance to the fact that in the activities observed, it was identifiable the presence of various competences of cognitive stimulation (memory, reasoning, focus, understanding, language, and motor competence). It is possible to verify that, on the observed activities, the technicians worked more competences than the ones initially lined out on their planning interviews, which indicates the lack of or diminished initial and ongoing development of studies in the area of cognitive stimulation.
