Abstract(s)
Over the years consumers have been realizing their active role on the demand and supply market. Whilst in the past consumers would purchase the items that were available, regardless of their price, nowadays it is common to carry out market research to identify the products or services that meet the consumers’ needs and expectations at the most attractive price. This is the great dilemma of organizations currently. Organizations began to understand they need to reinvent themselves to meet their clients’ expectations. Due to a fierce price competition, organizations’ focus has shifted to cost reduction so as to allow them to maintain their profit margin. In this context several cost reduction methodologies, such as Lean Thinking, emerged. Based on concepts of continuous improvement, Lean Thinking seeks to optimize organizations’ resources by identifying and eliminating waste. Having its origins in the productive sector, the challenge nowadays is to adopt Lean Thinking to other areas, namely the areas of service rendering. Within the organizations, there are some support areas, such as maintenance, where Lean concepts would allow higher level results. This dissertation seeks to develop a model, supported by several Lean tools, which allows the implementation of Lean methodologies in maintenance management. This model, applied in a case study, aims to introduce Lean maintenance concepts that would increase efficiency and effectiveness of maintenance management.
