Abstract(s)
This dissertation, entitled "Mental Health in the Institutionalised Elderly: The Role of Sociocultural Animation in Promoting Well-Being", investigates the contribution of sociocultural activities to the mental health of elderly people living in care homes, from the perspective of the professionals who intervene in them. Developed as part of the Master's programme in Social Education and Community Intervention, the study uses a mixed methodological approach, combining a pilot study, semi-structured interviews (n=25) and a focus group with socio-cultural animators. A total of 30 professionals from different areas related to gerontological intervention took part in this study: 4 in the pilot study, 25 in the interviews and 7 in the focus group. The results show: • The recognition of mental health as a structuring dimension of quality of life in an institutional context, with a direct impact on adaptation to the home and the active participation of residents; • The existence of structural constraints, namely the shortage of mental health professionals, the prevalence of a model centred on physical care and the weakening of family ties; • The effectiveness of strategies that value the autonomy and identity of the elderly, such as artistic, musical, expressive and intergenerational activities; • The centrality of socio-cultural animation as a space for creating bonds, promoting self-esteem and combating loneliness. The conclusion is that the promotion of mental health in care homes needs an integrated and multidisciplinary approach that values the emotional dimension of ageing and recognises socio-cultural animation as an essential pedagogical, relational and therapeutic tool for a more humane, active and dignified institutionalisation.
